No way on earth we trade down, there's too much talent on the roster that we might have to cut in order to make room for extra picks.  My guess is we stay in the first but possibly move up once or twice more in the draft.

Extra picks you say?

Well,  if theres a lot of takent on the roster we could do exactky what we did last year and trade up a time or two to get rid of extra picks and get better players.

We arent cutting established good players for "extra picks"

Gman presents a frompy, aw shucks public persona, but when he disappears behind the draft curtain, he turns into the "Wizard of Mint Street".  You can't put him in a box and say he won't do this or he'll only do it one way.  Drafts are not static and he has shown that he can move with the ebbs and flows.  He'll be looking to improve the Panthers any way he can both short term and long term.  If he sees an opportunity to improve be moving up/down he won't hesitate.  Whether he's done anything before has no bearing on what he might do in this draft.

If anything, given Gettleman's track record and the talent already on the team...I could see us trading up. He's shown time and time again, if one of his guys is sitting there and may not make it to our pick, he will go grab him.  Can be risky if it continues and the depth on the team gets diminished (like the Falcons have witnessed), but I have no issue with it, especially in the middle rounds.

Btw the Seahawks did exactly what is suggested by the OP with the Vikings in 2014 so that they could get Bridgewater over the Texans.  How'd it turn out for the Hawks?  Paul "Glass Joe" Richardson and OUR very own Kevin Norwood amidst several other feces.  All they got out of 9 total picks in that draft was one player that actually plays for them-a total bum in Britt instead of simply staying put and taking Bitonio to help their pathetic line.

Negative.

1) 5th year option

2) Weak draft for top tier talent

3) We probably don't have the roster space for a full draft anyway. If anything, we'd trade up.

Yeah, roster space is an interesting question.  When I posted my "roster building" thread about 2 weeks ago, that very question was one of the things I was thinking about in trying to guess who of the current players on our roster will make the 2016 roster.

Not counting PS squad & Futures contract guys, we ended the season with 61 guys on the active roster and IR, or 62 guys if you count Wes Horton who's been resigned and presumably will be competing again for a spot on the active roster.

That breaks down to 24 starters, 20 key role players / 18 backups as follows

(those in red are free agents this year).

24 Starters:  I assume Allen, Harper, and Tillman are gone, leaving 21 of these players on the roster.

20 role players:  I assume Cotch retires, and that we might let go about 3 of these players, with my guess being Edwards, Teddy Williams & Fozzy, leaving 16.

So, among these players, we'd already be up to 37 on the roster...

Then there are 18 backups    8 (in bold) seem like pretty sure bets to keep and probably 1 or 2 more like Scott or Silatolu could make it too... Let's say we keep 10 of these guys..

That gets us up to 47 players from our current 62, meaning we'd have space for 6 new players on the 53.   Even if you assume we lose another 2 or 3 guys to unexpected injuries or better offers in free agency, competition is going to be HOT for a very small number of roster spaces....
