Panthers free agent possibilities/predictions

Some second tier guys I think could be on the radar:

Alfred Morris, Sean Smith(least likely), Tyvon Branch, Akiem Hicks, Nick Fairly, Robert Ayers, Andre Smith, Ladarius Green, Casey Hayward, Rishard Matthews, Sanu, Jevon Kearse, David Bruton.

I would be happy if we got two or three of those guys.

Yea there was literally zero percent chance we sign him or any of the most expensive FAs.

Besides the fact that he gave up on his team last year and it was reported he was a locker room cancer.

I could actually see stuff like this happening.

There are just some positions where draft picks just historically do NOT come out of college ready to produce.  DE's are at the top of that list.

And I hope OL and safety help are on that list.  I like this big guy;

I know it is cliche but I also hope decisions are based on locker room also.  I don't think you can sell short the strength of it this past season and adding someone like Grimes (and wife) with all that drama attached would be counter productive.

I think Gman has 2 question when it comes to FA. Are you an Upgrade? And will you fit in? If the answer is yes to both. You may be a Panther.

An $8 million per year average seems like a good deal for Mario Williams in light of all the other ridiculous contracts being handed out. (Malik Jackson gets $15 million per!!!!). If that's a three year backloaded deal, he could turn out to be a real bargain.

Oh god no

I have already said it many times if look at the last 4 or 5 SB winners, they all have one thing in common they brought in notable free agents. Its hard win the big one bargain buying in today's NFL

You said some things "many things" last offseason too, repeatedly predicting we were going nowhere.

How'd that work out for ya?

Was just looking at an NFL.com article about free agents who might be able to contribute and saw this about DT Brandon Mebane.

Seahawks DT Brandon Mebane: The mammoth Seattle mainstay just turned 31 and plays on a defense that's now loaded with well-paid 20-somethings. But as a second-wave free agent, he's certainly got the potential to really help someone, health permitting. One rival pro scouting director said, "He can still wreck games."

He's not a player I know a lot about... , nor do I recall seeing his name mentioned much here.  Is he someone who could fit our Dline, starting in the rotation to replace Dwan?

Thoughts?

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
