Super Bowl Appearances

being good year in and year out is the best way to have multiple shots at a super bowl.  in the NFL about the highest thing you can realistically hope for is to have more than one chance.  if people want to do their chest pounding "bah any season that doesn't end in a lombardi is a failure" thing then that's fine but it's not rooted in the reality of pro football.

again, it's not a binary proposition.  it's not "good year to year but never ever win" vs. "win one and then suck for a decade".  i mean if those were the only two options of course everybody would take the second one.

Yeah, this is basically my view on it. I don't care if we are constantly good if we never win the whole thing.

What happens if you sell out for that one season and then you don't win it.

That happens a lot. And then you wind up with several seasons of garbage and nothing to show for it.

Our GM isn't the type to make panic moves. And his slow, steady approach has given us the best run of success this team has ever seen.

I'll take that over the alternative every time.

This is why I don't understand the "wasting prime years of our stars' careers" point that some people toss out... it makes no sense. I'd bet that most players would rather win more than they lose while knowing that they have a genuine shot at the title every year rather than have years truly wasted away a la Cleveland, Miami, etc.

I also don't understand how people think that new players are the ONLY way to improve. If Panther fans should have taken anything away from the past couple of seasons, it's that superior coaches figure out a way to use the talent on their roster to beat their opponents. It takes a certain level of talent to make this truly feasible, but Carolina is above this threshold and it's perfectly reasonable at this point to think that the talent level will continue to trend upward.

All some folks understand is shiny new toys.

Player development is actually a pretty big deal.

Great post.  Though now I'm terrified because our company of teams that have been to two superbowls but won neither are the Bengals and the Eagles.  Both franchises that I (and many others) laugh at for their choking ways.  Franchises that I would not be at all surprised to never see win a superbowl in my lifetime.

I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.

Look on the bright side. The Broncos lost their first 4 Super Bowls before they broke the streak (with a respectable running game and defense) in '97. The Patriots lost their first 2 ten years apart as well before....never mind.

We'll get there. Be patient.

Well, the good thing is that several teams have lost their first two (or in some cases more) superbowls and then went on to win some.  New England and Denver both had sb losing streaks before going on to win a few.

The problem with that approach is that the only thing guaranteed is years of cap hell afterwards. It doesn't guarantee a Super Bowl win. Teams like the Dolphins, Colts and Saints found out the hard way.

Well it was a hypothetical question where we'd actually win it if we did that approach. If I had to choose, I'd rather go all out and win it and then be in cap hell.

Just remember, the Patriots lost their first two Super Bowls too...

I would expect this version of the Panthers. With the culture and talent that permeates from the top to the bottom. To be in the running for a LOT of SuperB owls.  And I also expect Cam to get his fair share. He ain't happy with how things worked out last year. He will do everything within his powers to make sure it don't happen again next time. Or the time after. Or that time after that.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
