You have to be able to find diamonds in the rough or else you're looking at losing those top picks because you can't afford their big contracts.

it should be obvious and no, not all 1st and 2nd rounders become pro-bowlers, but we sure do have lots of them and we'll have our hands full when it comes time to sign Ealy, the DT twins, Trai and KB.

Never mentioned Pro Bowlers but 1st and 2nd rounders should contribute immediately and eventually become starters.  Hopefully solid starters.

Those diamonds and so far Gettleman has shown he can find them, is what makes the difference in a good team and a Super Bowl contending team.

Couple years ago we were guessing who would make the 53 man roster.  Now we are wondering which good player is going to be left off that 53 man roster.  It is exciting to see us building a roster full of talented players that even if a starter goes down.  We have quality behind them.

Next man up is a great place to be. It's hard to believe that the last 5 guys who make our roster are capable of coming in if need be.

Our final 5 next year could very well be 5 guys we draft in April...that's just crazy.

Gettelman has selected 16 players in his three years as GM and only 3 are no longer with the team.

RB Tyler Gaffney tore his ACL and was claimed by the Patriots.

G Edmund Kugbila had back issues that ended his career having never played a down in a regular season game.

RB Kenjon Barner was traded to Chip Kelly and the Eagles. (interesting note: in the post-draft press conference, Gettleman mentioned that he was torn between certain players but settled on Barner after position coaches assured him he would be a fit)

I know Gman says he hates to develop players for other teams. But if he continues to draft as well as he has. That's exactly what he is going to wind up doing.

 

Starting next year the cycle starts. Stah, and KK will need to be addressed. The next year is KB, and Trai. The year after is Shaq, and Fun Fun. And Luke, and or, Cam coming due again. With this years draft on the horizon. With any other players you have developed over the next few years.

 

Not everyone is going to survive. We are going to lose some good players. As well as those mid-level guys. Those later round guys you develop, will have decisions to make when their next contract comes due.

 

Starting this year. It is going to get progressively more difficult to make this roster. And some of those guys who don't make the team, or are let go, are going to be some good players. Teams will be watching our roster for a change.

 

Wow! So this how this football things looks when you do it right? Cool!

Case in point... This is Klein's last season of his rookie contract.  Probably his last season here.  That dude could be starting for several teams right now.

Kugbila and David Mayo are the only Gettleman picks I have ever actually thought were bad selections

      So happy that LaMelo got the layup to go and *won* the game. How happy he was after the game, that's what a young dude like him needs to keep it going and keep the belief going. If we lose, LaMelo gets blamed, and he's got an offseason to be in his head and hear the noise like the last few years. The season might still have an ugly ending, but weirdly feels like last night was HUGE for this team moving forward.

      My thoughts on Carolina's post-season run: Obviously, the season began with a below average Freddie Andersen and everyone hoping Kochetkov would pick up the slack, until he got hurt. Enter Brandon Bussi who had a made-for-TV movie type run until the end of the season, when he came crashing back to earth, his save % drops under .900 and the team needs to score 5-6 goals to win games. Freddie has shown signs of a resurgence and Bussi looked pretty good the last 2 games of the season, but both sample sizes are small and questions abound for all 3 goalies. The physicality of playoff hockey will take its toll. Save for a few players, the Canes best players are small, their top 2 lines are small and there's no getting around that. The only way to protect the size disadvantage is a strong forecheck. Allowing opposing teams to establish the offensive zone and create board battles with smaller players will hurt Carolina. The Stankoven line could be a difference-maker. If they continue to play well against lower defensive pairs, it only adds to the depth of the team.  The Aho line had stretches of absenteeism during the season. The Canes cannot afford to have them dry up offensively and leave the scoring to Ehlers and the Stankoven line. If they aren't performing well, teams will simply roll their best lines out on the Canes best playing lines.  If the Canes can get by Ottawa and get some help from Boston against Buffalo, I think they have a legit shot to make the finals. Make no mistake, I think their toughest challenges are Ottawa and Buffalo in the East.
