What 10 NFL Coaches have to say about Cam and how he changes the game

Great piece by David Newton.  He took initiative at the NFL owners meetings to talk to 10 head coaches and get their comments on how Cam's play has changed the game.  Just love reading this.  Its especially refreshing after all the blather about his post-SB press conference.  There's none of that here, just talk about what kind of rare talent he is, and how hard it is to game plan for the Panthers' offense.

Here are two of my favorite comments:

Exactly what did Newton's MVP season mean for the league? That was the question posed to 10 coaches attending the league meetings.

Here's what they said:

Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks

"He's a throwback to the players that have been able to create a factor, a physical factor in the game, where they have a presence that kind of extends beyond maybe the plays that they make. Meaning that he is part of the awareness of offensive players, because they know he's out there and what he's capable of doing, the problems he's able to create, because he's just so physical.

"He plays in the mold of Ronnie Lott and those type of guys. Other players knew he was out there. So they're wondering when he's gonna knock their head in when they're ready to make a play on him. Cam has had that factor."

Quote

Mike McCoy, San Diego Chargers

"He's an explosive player. A very talented player that can do it all. I had a really great one at Carolina in Jake Delhomme. There's a drive, there's a passion, there's a way you play, there's a love for the game. That's the way Cam is. He truly loves to play the game and the players fed off that.

"When you start making those plays when the game is on the line. ... There was always a 'wow' factor with him, but when you make those big throws and you make the guys miss with the ad-lib ability, really, the more he plays, the better he's going to get."

YES!  That's our QB!  #CaMVP

Kelly had to turn it into a Wilson, Cam topic not just Cam

Cam and Russ might seem even right now, but Cam will pull away the longer they play

I like Kubiak's "empty the backfield and still have a running game. There are not many teams that can do that."

Yup, I noted both things too.  Love Kubiak's comment.  So true.

"In the past, everybody was afraid these kind of guys would get hurt. Now they're thinking that he might hurt our guys." - Mike Zimmer

And Marvin Lewis saying if the Panthers passed,  he'd probably be a Bengal. Somewhere,  someone is turning that into an Andy Dalton article.

Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers

"He's a significant player, not only for Carolina but for football. He's a very talented guy. ... Just by his ability, what he's capable of doing on the football field. His skill set is unique. It's a challenge. He presents a unique set of variables from a defensive perspective in trying to minimize his impact on the game. He's a significant, significant player."

Cool article.

Once Cam took the passing game to the next level, he became a really hard player to defend.  The running game can sometimes be negated, same with the passing game, but it's hard to defend both.

Cam is now firmly in the top 5 players at his position in the NFL, probably top 3.

I think this may be Cam's lasting impact on he future of the game.  The difference between him and other mobile QBs with immense talent - like Kap and RG3 - is that he understands that he had to develop as a pocket QB in order to last.  The NFL WILL adapt to you once they study your film and pickup on tendencies.  Ultimately, as a QB, if you can't win from the pocket then the NFL will eventually figure you out.

Cam has become equally dangerous from the pocket as he is on the move and that's why he has become an elite QB and league MVP while guys like Kap and RG3 have their NFL careers hanging in the balance.

Hopefully the upcoming generation is taking note of this.

Yup, many of those guys are the best athletes on the field in college, and could get away with 1 read and roll....not in the NFL.  They often didn't have to put in the time to master an offense, as they were just better, Cam has obviously put the time in, and has decided that he wants to be great, not just good.

Glad he is in Carolina.
