Does Darryl Williams have a legit shot at replacing Mike Remmers?

The Remmers bashing is getting annoying.

Yes, he struggled against speedier pass rushers and got torched in the Super Bowl.

Yes, he played well enough for us to have one of the best/most consistent offenses in the league last season.

Daryl Williams may not be the savior many of you are hoping for. Just saying..

Jeremy thought he would replace him, relatively early in the season last year but then he got injured. I would say that means it is likely. Our coaches and front office believe in developing guys, so I would say he'll be improved this year and start, assuming no more injuries.

Darryl was very impressive last year in pre season with about 50/50 of his reps against the 1's and 2's.

Remmers is not the answer full stop. He choked when it counted.

Definitely he will. Not just Jeremy, but a lot of people last summer were saying he looked good. It's just a matter of time.

You better start learning to deal with it, that's what happens when bad players perform badly

It's not if, its when will Daryl take the job he just a better athlete.  Remmers will have every opportunity to keep the position and even has a leg up as the incumbent, but you can very well bet the FO is gonna be watching closely in camp.  Daryl was on pace to start before he got injured from what i remember.  May the best man win, i'm happy to have them both honestly.

Byron Bell is/was bad. Nate Chandler is/was bad. Mike Remmers is an average player who has performed satisfactorily against almost everyone he's faced, and it's unfortunate for both him and Carolina that they faced arguably the best edge rusher in the NFL in the Super Bowl. Not saying that Remmers is an answer or that Carolina shouldn't look to upgrade, because they should, but calling him bad is incorrect.

I'm not sure Daryl Williams is the answer for countering small / speed DEs like Beasley and Miller.  He has very long arms but was in the second percentile among all NFL OTs for lateral agility per his combine results.  By measurables, Remmers should be more agile while Williams much stronger in the run game.

The caveat, of course, is that measurables aren't everything and he'll get his opportunity.  I think he can be a better OT than Remmers but I think he might have the same liability (speed on the edge).

I agree with Kspan and Mjligon a bit here. Remmers is at a skill level that sets him above 55-60% of the starting RTs in the league. That's not faint praise -- he can handle the game to game duties of the position well and has stood up under pressure from a lot of the league's best. Is he elite? No, and the Superb Owl showed that he couldn't beat the best edge rusher in the game without help. But darned few other players were going to, either.

Remmers has experience, strength, agility and the smarts to play the position at a very high level and he was instrumental in providing protection for the #1 offense in the NFL last year. That's no small deal. If/when he goes out on the market, someone will sweep him up in the first week of FA and put him into their starting lineup. He'll get good, but not great, money and he'll serve them well for five years, maybe more.

Williams, by all accounts, has incredible potential. Massive strength, good technique, modest but workable agility. He has the makings of the classic roadgrader at RT. What he doesn't have, though, is real experience against first team defenders and pass rush specialists. He looked great in the preseason, but the big time DL players aren't giving it anywhere near their all and you don't see complicated stunts. On field learning and watching from the sidelines with a coach are the way to go here. 

I'd like to see Williams get some in game experience this season. Maybe they can rotate him in when the Panthers have the lead. Supplant Remmers right now? Not going to happen. Experience and chemistry mean too much to RR for him to just cast a guy to the side because some fans only watched the Superb Owl and didn't pay attention for the rest of the season.
