Great.  Draft him if he's BPA at any pick.  But don't let the near free gift of Hitner that just fell out of the sky pass us by either.  I can't wrap my brain around him wanting to be anywhere else, or another team paying a more fair (cheap) price.

We'd have to decide what's better. Coleman at SS and Boston at FS, which I think we would do if we stick with Boston, or leave Coleman at FS and have Whitner at SS. It would be nice to have the first option and bring Whitner in as a SS backup, but I doubt that happens.

The problem is; the savvy vets should be here for depth and mentoring, but Ron insists on starting them.

I think getting rid of Cotch and Harper might be a sign that Gettlemen is throwing out Ron's broken toys. We might see less of these types of signings.

I say our young core is now reaching vet status. Get us youth and speed.

First of all they where Gettleman's broken toys since we where shopping at Goodwill's and maybe Ron and Co. staff believe Boston needed another year before he started. If we do bring Whitner he is not gonna get the job automatically, its who ever earns it.

Yep, at the end of the day, Gettleman is responsible for personnel acquisitions, and it's not like Rivera doesn't  have his fingers on the pulse of the team. So far, no one has been given anything at any position. They all must compete for their position on the totem pole. I have always been somewhat at odds with the notion that a veteran is generally an impediment to a young player's development. Competition is key!.

Ok, here are PFF player grades for the Panthers safeties, Whitner, as well as some other safeties who are free agents in case it's of interest (I didn't list some other free agents who ranked worse than Harper, since our goal obviously is to UPGRADE).  Sorry I don't have access to PFF Premium stats.

Marcus Ball didn't have any grades.  Boston, Marlowe & Jones have grades, but no rankings due presumably to their limited playing time.

Update:  I've added players ages to the table.

What I gather from this chart is that the only legitimate upgrade for our team is Reggie Nelson. We've got a suspended player, a definite retiree, a probable retiree, a RFA, and Whitner. And even with the caveat that he was playing for the Browns, Whitner is on the decline and the wrong side of thirty.

As I've said before, the correct move is to play Coleman and Boston and let the defensive brain trust we have decide how it'll be best to utilize them. We do this while drafting a true box safety to groom for a year for when Coleman gets his payday and Boston slides over to FS.

We still have Boston and could still draft a safety.  But to get the kind of player I think you're looking for at this point would require a player or draft trade that would cost more resources and money than we'd want to give up.  Either that or the 80s Ronnie Lott clone falling out of the sky.

I'm not looking for anyone in particular.   That's not what I said.  I simply made the observation that his style of play would pair better with an earl thomas type.  I like coleman and I made a thread about Boss 10 during the playoffs.  I still want to see Marlowe too.  So you misinterpreted that.

Untrue.

Ron always will start the best man.

The fact of the matter, is savy veterans can make up for a talent handicap by their knowledge of the game.
