Any thoughts about these comments about D Henry?

4/2/16: At the combine, Henry declined to run the 40-yard dash, plus had a poor showing in the field drills. Teams also weren't blown away in his interviews. Still, this is a weak tight end class and Henry remains the favorite to be the first selected.

The biggest issue facing our society today (slightly exaggerated) are people who actually believe that the people doing press conferences for their favorite team actually believe the things they're saying and aren't just echoing age old tropes in an effort to get back to their lives as fast as they possibly can, which means every time legitimate draft discussion comes up on this board, you have some pseudointellectual dork saying "breh? Why all these words and great analysis? We just gonna do the BPA bro! Heh! Why should I worry when we doing the BPA"

Gettleman just took another player at a position of need.

I agree and disagree with this.

Even though BPA is a cliche and might be overstated, it is a cliche for a reason.  Over time, it has proven to be a fundamentally sound draft strategy.  Gettleman said recently that as people move forward, they get further and further away from fundamentals as they try to outsmart themselves.  I think every GM says they want the BPA and they talk all the same rhetoric, but its not always easy when there is so much pressure across the league to win NOW.  Thats what makes it so hard.  Its hard to build for the now and for the future.  But the GMs who stick to it the best (Gettleman), see more consistent success over time.  Its all about getting solid players from the draft, and being able to find cheap serviceable talent to fill the rest.  You may not have the "dream team" your after every year, but you will be competitive every year.  Not reaching for need is the safest way to compile good players.  There are no guarantees with any player.  But you have to assume that you will increase your odds of hitting on the pick if you take the player that you have rated higher.  You just need to have a GM like Gettleman who can fill in the missing pieces.

There is truth to what you are saying.  We arent going to take a QB or MLB with our first pick.. but I think Gettleman's short record here has provided us with enough examples to show that he believes that not going for the biggest positions of need is safer over time.  If you really go back and look, a lot of people were upset at Gettleman after the drafts because he did not take a player that people perceived to be our biggest needs.  He was willing to let Byron Bell hold down the LT spot for a year, because he believed in his philosphy of not overextending yourself and being patient.  His first year here, we had no DB's, but we didnt reach for any in the draft.  There are plenty more examples if you look.  But I also see examples where the player fits the need.  You can do both.  They are not mutually exclusive...as long as you dont take a player who is rated way lower than BPA just to fill a need.

Its really hard to know who we are gonna pick this year since we are picking so late.  We might have the opportunity to take someone who we never thought we would have the chance of taking.

Excellent post Jeremy. I firmly believe both players will be there at 30. Now, Maxx Williams went to Ravens last year at #55 and Hunter is a better prospect. Gman will have to decide, basically whoever he has a higher grade on will be the pick. Probably Derrick Henry since he knows there is a better chance of Hunter being available in round 2.

The Panther use BPA like many other teams, they take about 5 players who they think will be at their pick, rate  them 1-5 and take the BPA when  pick.  Gman said so much last year when explaining the trade up for Funchess said they had 5 players they were looking at and when they started to quickly go off the board , they made a move up.  If it happens that a player that is rated well ahead of their 5 falls, like Ealy, they will take them regardless of position need.

The theme of last year's draft was versatility, for no huddle offenses.  Shaq for staying in base or nickel w/o substituting and Funchess for moving around the los depending on what the defense was in.  With KBs injury they couldn't do much of this, but I would expect much more often this year.  In fact, i still think that we are looking at him as a Aaron Hernandez complement to Olsen.  From lining him up at TE (he played at Mich), in the slot , or even in the backfield.  If this happens, I doubt we look for a first round TE.

Does anyone know if we've met with or had an interview with Hunter Henry yet or at the least have one scheduled in the future? I know not every visit or interview gets reported so it may not be for sure even if it hasn't been reported, but since Gettleman has been here we have been pretty well linked ahead of time with the guy we end up drafting in the 1st and 2nd rounds and I've heard nothing about Hunter and the Panthers.

I think Jeremy(?) eluded to the possibility that we only meet with prospects with whom we have questions about.  If the FO is sold on a guy they more than likely won't bring him in so that they can use that time to answer questions about other prospects.

My concern with this would be what it would cost us to trade up in the second because we don't have a lot of fire power to move up.  If we traded our 2,3,4,5,7 we could get around the 10th pick in the second.  If we traded our 2,3 we could get to around the 16th pick in the second.  Trading our 2,4,5,7 would get us to around the 23 pick in the second.  May as well just stick around and see if someone else we like falls.

so supposing we think DH might get taken by the Seahawks, what would it take for us to move up with the Steelers pick at 25?   I know it's expensive to move up in the first, but we'd only be moving up 5 spots.

Our 3rd round pick would definitely get us to 25, our 4th would be a stretch. Our 1st and 2nd for their 1st and 3rd is another possibility to move up a 5-7 spots.
