Not really.

They'd have had to cut a healthy player to keep Gaffney on roster till IR was available.

He was never worth that. The Pats proved it (and wasted their time in the process).

The 90 man roster. They cut some turd that wasn't even going to make the first roster cut down to bring him on and were only down to 89 for like a week. They won the Super Bowl that year so I think it's fair to say not having a healthy player instead for a week didn't really affect them. When he was injured this past season they waived/injured him immediately but no one claimed him so he went straight to their IR without taking up a roster spot while injured.

He was never worth a draft pick to begin with.

Well, they did try to get out of his salary a year ago by waive/IRing him, but no one took the bait so they were stuck with him. Usually in that situation the team tries to work out an injury settlement to get out of the contract, but I'm guessing he wasn't receptive (I imagine we had a similar situation with Tyronne Green, no real reason to keep an impending FA you don't intend to re-sign him unless he just doesn't accept the buyout).

How much value do you generally put on a 6th round pick?

Most guys that are picked in the 6th or 7th aren't expected to be big deals, if they even make the squad at all.

By the time you get to that point in the draft it's "Hey let's give this kid a shot. If he doesn't work out, no big loss."

Mr. Scot, don't make me pull up that article by Joe Menzer that explained how Gettleman basically views every draft pick like gold. I believe Getty is the one that said there are no throwaways. I wholeheartedly agree. Every pick us an opportunity, and when you don't have a pick, it is an opportunity lost (regardless of stats and probability). Come on, man, you have to think like a GM. I am fairly certain that there was someone drafted in that round who is a productive player---at least good depth.

      No saying he mostly sucks is saying that he doesn’t suck the minority of the time.   Like if he took 17 tests and had a couple of really good showings and a handful of pretty good scores sprinkled in among the typical sub par results.   Like a golfer who went out and shot an 89.  There will be some real nice shots sprinkled in there but at the end of the day it is still 89.

      It's worth mentioning... Game 1: Oct 11 in Raleigh. 4-3 OT win with a complete starting lineup. Game 2: Dec 13 in Philly. 4-3 SO win without Jaccob Slavin. Game 3: Dec 14 in Raleigh. 3-2 SO win with a complete starting lineup. Game 4: Apr 13 in Philly. 3-2 SO loss with the AHL roster.  Those early season games were no indication of the Canes team that finished the season. Miller and Ehlers were still trying to figure things out, Nikishin was still a work in progress and the Stankoven line was just another line. Make no mistake, the Canes team Philly will see is nothing close to what they saw at any point in the season. If the top line starts producing, Freddie stays hot and the blue line does what it does, this could be a sweep as well.
