The following is a list of Panthers in the final year of their contract who the Panthers will need to re-sign or replace.

Ryan Kalil - one more contract, unless we get future center in this years draft (Ryan Kelly)

Kawann Short - big deal

Michael Oher - sweetheart deal

Charles Johnson - one more contract if he performs well this year

Kurt Coleman - lock him up long term on reasonable deal?

Mario Addison

Mike Remmers - will be solid depth

A.J. Klein

Colin Jones

Teddy Williams

Corey Brown

Andrew Norwell - fits perfectly in what we want to do

Robert McClain

Fozzy Whittaker

Scott Simonson

Chris Scott

Kyle Love

Brandon Boykin - im basing this of the probability that he will be good in our system

Trenton Robinson

Ben Jacobs

Wes Horton

Stephen Hill

Brenton Bersin

David Foucault

Louis Young

And about 16 other players.

Re-sign in red, replace in blue

Isn't Ginn's contract up next year as well?  It may be time to let him go at the end of this season, especially if we draft a speedy WR in this year's draft.

But yeah, that 14 mil will vanish quickly with all the contracts Gettleman has to work on in the coming 12 months.  It makes perfect sense that G'man let J-No go if it means re-signing another 3 or 4 players who've shown to be great fits in our system.

Short/Star and Turner/Norwell.  Kalil will have to sign a budget vet deal to stay, if he doesn't retire.  I'd love to see him keep playing, but we can't sign him to another big money deal.  Ginn?  Just a guy.  Re-sign cheap or bye.  Hopefully sign Oher to another two year deal.

All those other guys listed?  They're just guys.  They can easily be replaced.

Short and Coleman get extensions I believe. You won't see Star get an extension this off season. I honestly think Gettleman drafts Vernon Butler if he is there at 30 as the replacement for Star.

If DT is the bpa at 30 then we will select one but won't do it our of the need to replace Star.

Butler might be the pick to replace Star, then we sign KK, and let Star walk.  Saves cash

It's not that all those other guys are elite.  It's that they all know our system & playbook and they FIT.  It's the sheer quantity of them, not necessarily the quality.

I don't think we want to try to replace 8-10 starters & key role players all in one season.  So, we're gonna re-sign a bunch of them, and that takes some cash.  Especially if we're coming off a SB win!

That could happen but he won't go into the draft thinking, I want to replace Star so I don't have to pay him. That's my point.

Extend KK before the start of the season. That is the only logical thing to do. The only good that could come out of letting Norman walk and not play one last season. He needed the money now for KK. Because if he has as good a year or better this season, it is really going to get pricey.

Those guys are only getting signed for at or near vet minimum.  If they want more, they'll have to get it elsewhere.  There's a lot of bottom of the roster churn every year for every NFL team.  You identify your core guys and make sure you keep them.  Everyone else is expendable if they don't fit into your budget, even All-Pro CBs.

    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
