Head Scratchers in the Draft

The bucs trading up for a kicker didn't surprise me at all. Kicker is becoming a more important position and since they see him as their primary source of offense, bucs logic would dictate that you take the best kicker prospect in years.

The shocker for me was Smith in the 2nd by Dallas. I dint expect him to go that early with unresolved nerve damge. I though he might go late second or early third.

Jason LaCanfora dings the Giants for selecting Apple, implying Gettleman never would have made such a dumb pick.  (He also happens to love our pick of Butler)

Giants with Dave Gettleman vs. Giants without him: The Giants' selection of corner Eli Apple with the 10th overall pick was the first non-Tunsil true surprise of this draft for me. I had them penciled in for defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins or edge linebacker Leonard Floyd all along and the fact that the Bears traded up to get Floyd shouldn't have prevented the Giants from going with a defensive lineman.

Apple's size is a concern for some and scouts wonder if he can thrive on the outside. Rankins was one of the cleanest, pure players in the draft and many evaluators believe he would have immediately been the best defensive lineman on that roster. Keep adding big bodies to finally rebuild that defense, especially with so many other corners on the board later, and not that much seemingly separating them.

I asked about this and was told basically the Giants just preferred Apple over Rankins. That's one to watch down the line.

Meanwhile Gettleman, Carolina's GM and a former Giants exec, just kept drafting big bodies. While I don't agree with letting Josh Norman walk on a franchise tag at all, I applaud him for not letting that corner him into definitely taking a corner in the first round. He followed his board and despite having some quality beef up front on his defense and he grabbed a potential difference maker in Vernon Butler, a player who frankly merited selection higher. Gettleman used the second and third day to attack the corner position, but did the smart thing in the first round. Love that selection.

How all these media "mock-drafters" still have their jobs.

Its kind of like us, getting the player that fits your system? He fits Chip Kelly system for the run game. Compared to Gabe Jackson of Raiders.

STRENGTHS

Powerful frame with dense, muscular lower body. Very powerful at point of attack -- especially as base blocker. Held his own in the power department against UCLA's Kenny Clark. If he gets downhill momentum on defender, it's lights out. Able to strike and center his blocks between his shoulders. Team captain. Very good hand placement, upper body strength and hip torque to steer and turn opponent on hook blocks. Generates good power from legs and hips. Block winner in tight space near goal line. Takes good angles to second level block to make up for his lack of athleticism. Hard to beat him early in the rep on run plays. Can bury gap shooters with cave-in blocks. Comes out of stance with good bend, pad level explosion into target. Has power and hand strength to snap off twisters and receive incoming defender. Well-schooled with good hand work.

Indeed.

That could become infamous, like the Jags drafting their punter (the guy they just released so they could sign Nortman) in the 3rd ahead of a bunch of guys like Russell Wilson.

It's going to become a meme.  "Yeah, strange pick, bad draft, but at least we didn't trade up in the 2nd to pick a kicker"

I hope someone will keep a record of all the studs that emerge that Tampa could have picked instead!

...Wait, what!?!??! That was real? I missed the 2nd day & just heard about that. It wasn't a joke?

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  A one dimensional Guard would be hard to pick I'd think, but to trade up for him in the first.  Oh well, maybe Chip knows something

He has room to improve so could very well  become a solid  pass blocker. BTW the GM did draft one of the better OL cpl of years ago its not like Panthers are the only team that knows how to draft.

LA Rams trading up for Goff

and

Philly for Wentz

Winner.

I can at least kinda, maybe see it with Goff though. Wentz for all those picks is just godawful in my opinion.

Well, when you lose every game by 13 points, those field goals are.......something.
