Game that changed the season

Recommended Posts

Week 6

Panthers vs. Seattle

Rewatching this game couple of thing  stood out to me: J-Stews hard nose running, Ryan Delair pass rush, and secondary getting gashed by the TEs. Although I was not a big fan of the 3 CBs pick in a row, this game reminded me the importance of Bene & how good depth with speed in the secodnary will imrpove this defense for the long haul. J-Stew grinded out tough yards all year along with couple of big ones here and there with a loaded box all day, but those days should be gone this season as teams will be forced to double KB & Cams ability to spread the ball out efficiently will open up the running game tremendeously. This year J-Stew should break 1,000 yrds mark  with running lanes to hit more of the 10+ yards for a pro-bowl season.  Ryan Delair was getting pressure all day long, if it wasn't for Wilson's mobility, he would have recorded couple of sacks. Best moment of  the game are the 1st qtr midway through 3rd & 4th qtr of course.

Time Markers:

Ryan Delair: 2:50, 4:30,10:40,23:00

J-Stew: 6:55, 7:25,24:00,29:00,36:00

Thanks for sharing.  So many thoughts, but my biggest two-no mf'n way Luke isn't a top 10 overall player in this league.  Losing Irvin is such a huge loss for those guys who've done zero to replace him.

Delaire was awful this game. He overrides the edge and opened up running lanes which Wilson ran through all day long, which put the game at risk numerous times. It was wasnt just this week. It happened a number of times throughout the season. Even Brees ripped off a nice run through his gap because he came out too wide if I remember correctly.

He needs to build up significant upper body strength to pinch the pocket if he wants to be on this team. Really can't have him losing gap discipline and costing us because he's overpursuing around the edge.

Lol Growl, this being his second NFL game I think he can be excused for not setting the edge against one of the best read option QBs in the NFL. He was obviously benched because of his strength against the run when Allen came in but I think its clear he has some potential beating tackles for speed and with a decent set of pass rush moves.

Yes, this was a critical game, and Josh Norman was a huge factor.

Josh Norman was targeted on 9 pass plays. 4 pass attempts, 2 completions for -1 yard; 2 coverage sacks; 3 scrambles for 7 yards. He was in the game for 71 plays (#1 of all defenders).

The rest of the defense was targeted on 32 pass plays. 26 pass attempts, 16 completions for 242 yards; 1 coverage sack; 5 scrambles for 46 yards. The safeties were awful even with the ability to cheat away from Norman. Tillman and Bene were an even 50/50 mix of good and bad when they were targeted.

Norman will be a very big loss. QBs like Wilson will have it a lot easier.

Allen was doing the same thing as Delaire most of the season, going over the top and leaving huge gaps. That was his move for us and it never worked. Delaire has some potential, though. (Although, so did Stanley McClover.)

Delair just needs more weight & increase upper body strenth. He could be a type of player mixed between Mario Addison and Frank Alexander ( Can big frank play this season or his suspension through 2016). 5 sack season for Delair in 2016?

A few observations:

Stewart is so under appreciated. This guy is a monster who fought for every inch.

Who said Philly can't get separation?

We have never seemed to have an answer for Jimmy Graham. He's made of glass, so maybe he'll be on IR by the time we play the Hawks this year.

They have no answer for Olsen. He should have had 3 TD's that game but was dragged down at the 1 yard line twice .

We also had no answer for Bruce Irvin. It's going to be interesting playing them this year without him.

Also glad he isn't in Atlanta, although we will face him in Oakland.

Ryan Delaire. Talk about a player with upside... If this kid ever controls his athletic ability as a disciplined football player, he could be a Cameron Wake type of player.

I really think the Panthers should've used him more in the SB. He is a von Miller type DE.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
