Rookie Camp Recap: Ron's thoughts on DE's

If only Addison could excel against the run....we'd have something REALLY good incoming. Let's say Mario added CJ's run stopping ability to his skill set...he would be an everydown DE and with a little added weight hands down the best one of the bunch. Dude has some wheels on him.

Ron has "his guys", that much has been proven since his first year here.  Some guys get free passes for life, some get into a "dog house" and have to claw their way out no matter how much better they are.  It's Ron's greatest flaw as a coach and it annoys the poo out of me.  Horton is the worst example of it, and Addison is a lesser one.

Here is to hoping Miley (I like his length better than Cox/s at RDE) steps up.

Funny, but think where we would have been had CJ not come back for much less money than he would have received elsewhere. Remember when Ron and Dave went to Johnson's mother's funereal?  I wonder if something like that played a role.

CJ is one of the few Panthers with their own personal skyboxes for their families.

CJ has a unique relationship with JR and the Panthers.

Delaire, Addison and Ealy are all very solid in what they do and we're still waiting to see how much they can all develop and this may be the year where we get to see them shine.

Just looking at our interior D, it's easy to be optimistic about what kind of pressure our younger DEs can put on opposing QB's. It certainly should be a huge relief to our young secondary if we can get pressure and stop the run.

im still waiting for a vet-pickup at safety really soon.

Don't be surprised if we extend Addison soon. He's in his last year and he's only 28 years old.

Addison got pretty high marks last season.  Because he's only in for a limited number of plays, I tend to forget about him, but (for what it's worth) he was ranked our 3rd best DE last season by PFF (#60 overall out of #110) after CJ & Ealy, and Bleacher Report ranked Addison as the BEST of our DEs last season (#13 of their top 40 4-3 DEs)

"We really liked what we saw ..... He’s explosive; he is quick off the ball, good hand usage."

Hope Cox continues to promote lots of 'like'.

And frank Alexander being his camp MVP...

I don't think Frank was graded on his off the field activities.

Really looking forward to see how Delaire has progressed. He gets forgotten, when people talk about our second year players, but he played well in spots

And I'm not sure what's up this coaching staff's fascination with Wes Horton. Not sure why he's even here when you combine his lackluster play and suspension.

I also cannot remember another guy in our history that we kept on putting on the 53 man squad that had been cut twice. It's silly. If you don't want him, just get rid of him.

He needs to be given an extension. I really believe he can give you 10 sacks, even with limited playing time. Can probably get him signed to a decent deal now as well if you lock him up now

Hope these DEs step up more this year. We really need to find a way to replace Jared Allen's 2 sacks and Dwan Edwards' 1 sack.

They ain't walking back in that door, people. And without them, how are we going to rank #6 in sacks again? 44 sacks was good for #6, but 41 sacks only gets us #11.

And don't get me started on the 115 hurries we had last year, which was #5 in the league. Oh, the humanity

plus Addison has proven he can excel on pass rushing downs- he's not a 3 down end, but he has an NFL skill and is familiar with our system

    • As expected. Still no reason not to bring in competition via FA or draft. Bryce can be our bridge QB until we find ourselves our franchise QB.
    • I've been here since the forum started.    It's an X through Fitterer because I couldn't stand him.   Very troll like behavior.
    • I agree with this, wholeheartedly. Bryce tantalizingly has his moments, even his games. This past Saturday was one of those. He really became the Mouse that Roared after the team fell behind and the o-line started collapsing. And, in truth, I think had the play calling been better at the end, he might well have brought us back into another lead change. Talk about a legendary moment just missed. I'm going to get lambasted for this but as a cautionary tale, I want to just say we're sitting at a spot that the San Diego Chargers were way back in the day. They had a short-ish QB on a rebuilding team that was underwhelming most games, but had some really good moments. They decided instead to take a gamble on drafting someone new and letting that QB, Drew Brees, go find someone more willing to let him develop. They turned around and had a draft debacle with Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers, ending up with Rivers in the end. We've got to remember that Brees wasn't who he would become at that time, it would take a coach willing to open up the offense and give the tough young kid a chance to grow. Rivers would become the poster child for the guy who almost was. Brees will get a gold jacket someday to go with the Saints only Superbowl win. Bryce probably isn't Brees, only one guy was and he barely got the chance to be him. Giving Bryce another season, maybe two, on squad gives us the luxury of testing the waters and the growth.  QBs early in their careers take time. We saw Rogers last night at the end of his career (maybe), sputtering out before he heads to the barn for his spot in the HoF and we have to remember him at his best, after sitting on the bench for three years. And we have to look at the other side of that coin last night, CJ Stroud, a draft classmate of Bryce's who soared out of the gates but who has come to earth since. He's still a good QB with a long runway ahead of him, but his performance under the big spotlight wasn't as strong as Bryce's on this particular weekend. I'm not 100 percent sure Bryce will be the guy. I'd like to see some more fire in the young man, some push, something that shows he can force his will on the other team's defense.  I am, however, seeing a kid that can make the throws, who can improvise and who amazingly can run braver and faster than I really thought he could. I think he needs time, he needs more confidence and he needs more brave coaching. If he doesn't get that here, I think he might find it elsewhere. And we'd find ourselves like the Spanos family, sitting on the couch in February asking Phillip Rivers to pass the chips during the Super Bowl commercial breaks year after year.
