Who Can Do it Better...?

For the sake of the conversation let’s just assume the following is our ''Week One offense'' , the question is who in the NFL is better…?

QB-

Cam Newton

HB-

Jonathan Stewart

Fozzy Whittaker/Cameron Artis-Payne

FB-

Mike Tolbert

WR-

Kelvin Benjamin

Devin Funchess

Ted Ginn Jr

Philly Brown

Stephen Hill

TE-

Greg Olsen

Ed Dickson/Beau Sandland

In all seriousness gentleman I’m curious across the NFL who boasts a better set of QB and skill position players on offense across ALL the position groups?

If only gentlemen can vote that really restricts the participation around here, not to mention shutting out the ladies. lol

We had all these guys as starters in the SB and came up short so I'm not that enthusiastic about claiming we've got the best players at the skill positions. It's a team game and you've gotta have all the parts meshing.

No, not all these guys played in the SB.

Well, considering the fact that we had the #1 offense in the NFL last year and we essentially have the exact same squad coming back plus getting a healthy KB back and having Darryl Williams competing at OT to possibly improve our two weakest position groups... I'd argue no one is better.

The only offense I can think of that might give us a run is the Steelers.  Ben, Leveon, Brown, and now green at TE is a very well rounded group. If Martavis wasnt suspended id probably give them the edge. Of course we have a better coach, defense, and QB which is why we went 15-1 and they went whatever they went.

Eh... I'd be cautious definitively stating that Rivera is better than Tomlin. Tomlin has coached 9 seasons and has won a Super Bowl, been to another, and been to the playoffs 6 times.  He's never had a losing season as a head coach (two .500 seasons).  He's 92-52 as a head coach for a 64% win rate.  That's a really damn solid resume.

I personally think that Rivera is the better coach right now and that's what matters most, but I could understand someone arguing otherwise and if they both retired today, Tomlin would go down as the better coach.

I'd say the Panthers are at the top.  A few other teams are in that convo but maybe aren't quite as well rounded.

Steelers are in that convo, certainly. I'd say Arizona and Greenbay are as well. And... surprisingly if Bortles continues to progress, Jacksonville might not be too far away.

I think that last year (and a lot of history) was a good lesson that having good skill position players does not translate into more wins or a great offense.

Think about all of the teams in recent history that get over hyped because everyone likes to look at their flashy skill positions (Colts, Falcons, Lions, Cowboys, etc)  and vice versa (Seahawks, Patriots, Chiefs, 49ers, Ravens, etc).  How come all the great skill position players the Jags had last year couldnt get them over the hump? Its still mostly about tackling and blocking and being physical.

Sorry if thats not what this conversation is about, but i wanted to point that out.

Was in the process of mentioning the jags. Bortles, Ivory/Yeldon, J Thomas, and Arob/Hurndog is an impressive group.

This. Our receivers aren't great. We have a 1 (IF he comes back as good as 2013), and a ton of 3's. Not really a problem. Seattle and New England have been doing just fine with similar talent, while Calvins team keeps missing the playoffs.

Main two things I attribute to our #1 offense...

1: 30.53 - Offense average starting field position (Ranked 2nd)

2: .196 - Defense turnovers per drive (Ranked 1st)

I love how even our own fan base is greatly under estimating Brandon Wegher!

unedited, as of early June of 2016, I think we have a loaded backfield when others think its a weakness

i really think Wegher will be the stud of the future and CAP will be a good change of pace

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
