Preseason Observations of our 2016 Opponents

So... since I'm on vacation this month, I've had a bunch of free time, and also since I'm here in the States I'm able to watch the preseason games live at a reasonable hour.  A nice treat, since back in Africa all evening games are at midnight or 1 a.m. for me.... Thus, I've done a lot more viewing of non-Panthers preseason games than I usually do this week.

Obviously it's preseason week 2, and it doesn't mean much yet, especially as so many teams seem to be opting to sit many key starters for this week's games, but here are a few thoughts based on  3 games I watched all or part of last night & tonight:  (Vikings - Seattle;  Arizona - San Diego;  Washington - NYJ)

1) Viking's defense looked very potent last night.  Maybe it's just how bad Seattle's Offensive Line is, but Vikings seemed very disruptive in terms of pass rush, sacking Wilson 4 times in the game last night, if I recall correctly.

2) Arizona is really struggling on offense.  Larry Fitzgerald wasn't in the game tonight, but still, Palmer & Stanton both threw picks, and they couldn't move the ball down the field.  Palmer & Stanton combined went 6 / 15 for a total of 69 yards.  0 TDs.  2 INTs.

3) San Diego may not be the doormat I've been expecting.  They looked pretty solid playing against Arizona, even without playing Rivers tonight.  Especially given how they were drubbed by the Titans last week, their showing against Arizona really surprised me.  Definitely a team to keep an eye on and not be too quick to assume this is an easy W for the Panthers.  There is lots of excitement for Hunter Henry.  The announcers were really hyping him up...

4) Seattle, Even with Russell Wilson in for most of all of the 1st half, they didn't get much going on offense.  I was distracted while watching the game, however, and couldn't exactly tell what their problem was.  Certainly the Vikings were getting a lot of pressure on Wilson in the 1st half, and sacked him even as he was scrambling..., but it seemed more than that.

5) Washington:  I only watched the 1st half.  Kirk Cousins didn't play, so that perhaps means there's not much worth in commenting on their offense, but it was striking to see that although Washington controlled the ball for a crazy amount of time in the first 20-25 minutes of the game, they couldn't get points on the board.  Late in the 2nd quarter they finally did.  But I see too that they had a ton of 3 and outs in the 2nd half that I didn't watch.  Until their game-winning final drive when they scored a TD, they had only 2 1st downs and 15 total net yards in 6 drives in the 2nd half.  One other weird thing about Washington:  Josh Norman didn't play at all tonight, and he only played 3 snaps with absolutely no stats  (tackles or PBUs) in the 1st game.  I'm surprised they're not giving him more reps.  Anyone heard anything about this?

Anyway, I'd love for others to chip in with what struck you from any preseason games you watched, especially re: teams we have to play this year.  I've not yet watched any games of our NFC South division rivals, so I can't comment on them....

Two other quick notes:

1) I wonder why so many teams are choosing to sit their starting QBs for preseason game 2 this year?  Bridgewater, Rivers, Cousins all DNP, and I'm pretty sure other teams around the league have also sat their starting QB this week... odd.

2) DAK PRESCOTT.  Wow.  I haven't watched either Dallas game, but from the highlights and stats, Prescott looks amazing.  Interesting that he was one of the 3 QBs we reportedly were paying attention to (had a private workout with him) prior to the draft.  DG knows talent!!!   Of course we don't need a QB...

Prescott could make Dallas very dangerous if he turns into the real deal.  With their Oline and their run game too... Dallas looks like they could be a real powerhouse on offense.  It will be fun to watch Prescott play, I think, but dang, I'm annoyed Dallas has got him.  I want Dallas to suck!  The Dallas hype is gonna be unbearable if he turns into a star.

Dak Prescott looks good, better than any backup the Cowboys had behind Romo the last few years. Could turnout to be Romo's replacement, and maybe sooner than later depending on Romo's health. Wilson and Seattle's offense has looked terrible. 8 drives I believe with the first team and no points. Didn't watch their game 1 but the Vikings demolished them pretty well.

But remember, most of this means nothing. We looked absolutely horrendous against the Dolphins last year in the game and practices. And we all know how both our seasons turned out

I was lazy tonight (and too full from a delicious rack of baby back ribs that my brother grilled for dinner!) and didn't watch any of the other preseason games, just kept an eye on the scores via ESPN's website...

I had to laugh at this blurb giving a summary of the Saints loss to Houston.

FINAL: TEXANS 16, SAINTS 9. Fittingly, the Saints' late rally ended with an interception in the end zone as time expired. They couldn't find the end zone all night, thanks to turnovers, dropped balls, poor pass protection, poor run game ... Basically poor everything. Defense kept it close, though.

The bold is mine.  That's got to be terrifying to the Saints if their defense outplayed their offense!

Yeah what I've been noticing this preseason is GMan seemingly nailing evaluations again. Hunter Henry getting praise, Derrick Henry having nice moments, and Dak Prescott looking like Romo's replacement. Combined with our CBs impressing thus far and hopefully Big Vern being the guy we want him to be....DG might just know what he's doing with the whole drafting thing.

Exactly.

Defevses are not game planning...there is no tape on him...and it is preseason.  There have been a ton of players (qb's included) that look good in the preseason and never put it together in the ref season.

Prescott has talent..but he was very inconsistent at times in college.

I had some time to veg out. I'll echo what people that know football have already stated, it's preseason. That something I wish most would learn, instead of overacting......but huddle going to huddle.

Onto the theme I've seen, most OLs are currently terrible. Seattle and arizona OL look awful. DJ humphies, right now super glad they picked him and leftd shaq for the panthers. Vikings what a coach Mike Zimmer is, they are a sleeper superowl team in my book. If norv can figure teddy out and score in the 20s, watch out. San Diego I was surprised to see Melvin Gordon run the ball this soon after the career killer miro-surgery, I don't see them as a issue unless rivers gos video game on the panthers. Cannot comment much on Washington, mainly use as background noise. But I respect the hell out of their GM.

Never the less, unlike most here I see each of these games as your normal nfl games. Single score leads coming down the last eight minutes. Would not shock me if the outcome is 3-2 given these opponents.

I mean, I cant understand why DangeRuss cant get the offense going either. All those different drops he takes, ya know? Like all the times he drops back in those 7 step drops and fires out passes I wonder whats going wrong? Did they lose somebody on offense too? hmm weird.

lol trending downward to say the least.

The Panthers broke Arizona, lol.

Hell yeah.
