My bad.. didnt know RR mentioned this already. I am wondering should i bench KB this week because of limited snaps

I wouldn't bench KB. He's always on Cam's radar. He will get his touches. I don't think RR saying he should get about 35 snaps will mean much. Guys were on rotation last year and it was revealed that basically no one was keeping track. KB will play as long as he can.

From Ask Bryan last week:

http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Ask-Bryan-Benwikere-Benjamin-bouncing-back/ed1d6351-bc76-4468-990b-5ea6c22e26a1

Will Kelvin Benjaminicon-article-link.gif be on a pitch count in games early in season like they do in baseball to ease him back into the NFL game flow? – Jan in Asheville, N.C.

Yes. And no.

Benjamin, coming off a knee injury that cost him the entire 2015 season, played eight snaps in the preseason opener and nine in the second game. But the first-team offense was only on the field for just 31 total snaps, and he was in for 17 of them.

Head coach Ron Rivera has stated a goal of having Benjamin ready to play 30-35 snaps by the end of the preseason. If he is ready for that kind of action Week 1, it will be well below the 57 snaps on average (out of 67 snaps on average for the Panthers) that he played as a rookie in 2014, but that was pre- Devin Funchessicon-article-link.gif . With Funchess now providing another big target and with the Panthers liking to pair a big receiver with a speed merchant ( Ted Ginn, Jr.icon-article-link.gif  or Philly Brownicon-article-link.gif ) in many of their two-receiver sets, it's hard to see Benjamin playing as many snaps as he did in 2014 regardless of his conditioning.

So, if Benjamin does play 35 snaps in the opener, that might not be that far from his norm in 2016.

Ron has stated multiple times that KB will be on a snap count.

No he didn't. He said they want to get him a certain number of snaps.  But if KB can handle more, then he will play more. He is only limited by his conditioning at this point.

This whole KB is out of shape bs is getting really really old...dude is coming off a knee surgery but some act like KB was the one out there asking to come off the field in the PRESEASON....the coaches dictate how much players play in the PRESEASON, not the other way around. I'm sure KB will go whistle to whistle tmrrw night if the coaches allow it. We will Prbly sub at some point but we have 6 solid WRs I'm sure at least 5will see significant time.

Actually, Rivera said in one of his latest press conferences how upset KB was at how bad his conditioning was. Rivera said he struggled in training camp to stay on the field but it was to be expected. KB isn't out of shape but not playing football for a year makes it hard to be a game shape no matter how much you practice. If he stays healthy, I think it will take 2 or 3 games before KB is really ready to play the entire game.

I'm saying theere are people acting like KB is at fault for all this. Im sure he's done everything the trainers/coaches/doctors would allow him to do, it's not Like he's been purposely slacking. And I've also learned to take what RR says about playing time with a grain of salt. Does anyone really think that if the games on the line in the 4th quarter that KB is gonna be in the sidelines because he's had too many snaps?!

One of the brightest positives from Training Camp and Preseason was the play of the WR group. I think that took a lot of pressure off the Panthers feeling like they had to force KB to do more than he was ready to do. In my opinion, only Philly Brown hurt his stock this preseason and everyone else blew the doors off. Even guys like Bersin and Norwood. Funchess emerging did a lot for us here too. I would expect to see KB a lot in hands situations. 3rd and short, etc. When the field is wide open or we feel like taking a shot, I think it'll be Funchess and Ginn as the primary options with Philly and Byrd splitting snaps.

Also, some of y'all need to relax on this being an indictment of KB's conditioning level or something. When a guy at a skill position as big as he is tears his knee up, it's not going to be a clean recovery. It's going to take some time. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to learn that KB isn't going to feel right until about halfway through the season. There are cuts that you have to make in practice and in games that he hasn't made in a full calendar year. His body has to get used to that motion again.

Good point!  I also am feeling like these kind of comments from Rivera are as much smoke screen as they are a veiled challenge to KB.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
