What is Wrong with the Offense you ask?

From what I have seen, the main issues are:

1. Penalties - we have had several 10+ yard plays taken back this season

2. Lack of Ted Ginn going vertical - This is being overlooked.  Say what you want about Ginn, but he helped us out TREMENDOUSLY last season by being a speed demon.  It feels like with Benjamin back, we haven't tried to incorporate him in that regard as much.  Newton did miss him in the Vikings game, but look what we did against the 49ers when Ginn was going deep.  I don't think I saw it as much in say, the Falcons game.

3. Cam regressed.  He's still a top 10 QB, but he isn't playing at the all-star level he was last year and isn't able to cover up as many of our flaws.

4. Cam is hurt.  No matter the week, it's either his shoulder, ankle, or whatever bothering him.  He has taken a lot of punishment and when we lessen his role in the run game, we have no run game.

5. Not enough Fozzy.  Just like I didn't understand people being in such a rush to get rid of Fozzy throughout the offseason, I don't understand why the coaching staff doesn't use him on offense more.  CAP might be a better inside runner, but Fozzy is (undoubtedly) the better all-around back.  He's extremely elusive with very good burst.  On a team whose primary starters aren't that fast (Benji, Fun, Olsen), Fozzy adds a much-needed element to our offense.  He needs more touches.

6. We're too reliant on Cam Newton to make plays.  This goes back to point 3 and 4, but ultimately we are asking too much out of him.  Some of it is on Cam, but a lot of it is due to play design.  We don't run a lot of plays designed to be quick hitters, like rubs, bunch formations, etc.  Cam is too good not to play a factor in the run game, but we still need to employ more of a traditional run game.  Granted I guess this is hard when your FB is Mike Tolbert but lets run out of center more.

6. Inopportune turnovers.

7. Our offense isn't that talented.  A lot of people are going to hate to read this, but our offense isn't as talented as some think it is.  We overachieved offensively last year and came back down to Earth.  I could honestly leave this entire post to Point 1, Point 6, and Point 7 and it would be accurate, because really those are the main factors.  Penalties and turnovers have killed us, but our offense really isn't that much worse than it was last year (especially at this point in the season; we didn't get consistently rolling on offense until the Green Bay game IMO).  Similar passing NY/A, similar rushing Y/A, similar yards.  The difference in scoring production comes down to penalties, turnovers (32nd this year as opposed to 8th last year), and not getting nearly as many opportunities from our defense.  Turnovers and penalties have always been something that fluctuates.  Cam will probably lessen the amount of turnovers (6 turnovers already) to get back to where he is typically and we probably (hopefully... I would think) lessen the amount of penalties we get called on us.  And it will (likely) lead to more points scored.  Everything will balance out.

tl;dr - Our offense isn't that much worse than it was last year aside from things that always fluctuate around the league (unless your QB is Tom Brady who rarely turns it over) and once those things regress to the mean (penalties might be iffy, but I think we'll tone it down), we will start scoring more points.  It isn't like our offense hasn't been able to move the ball.  Second half was a different story but we made it look EASY against the Vikings in the 1st half.  We just killed ourselves with penalties and Cam missing throws (like the should be Ted Ginn touchdown at the end of the half) that I would bet he makes more often than not.

I'm honestly a lot more worried about our defense than our offense.  The lack of pass rush and regression of Short has killed us.

I agree on what you say.

For the lack of basic oline fundamentals.....just browse through the 1st page of threads on the forum. Many gifs of missed blocking assignments for proof.

I've seen a good many gifs of Tolbert whiffing on blocks. Though, if he continues to keep pounding the Krispy Kremes, he could be our next starting LT.

The point I am making is that teams are not afraid of our running game this year. That puts the "eighth man in the box" back in coverage. Cam Newton will not be able to run forever, and if his legs give out and he is making poor QB decisions placing the ball this team in serious trouble moving forward, not just this year. We need a sturdy run game, preferably a back with blocking skills to achieve an offensive balance. Right now the balance is off. I don't like it but a healthy Stewart will help us tremendously. The problem is Stewart is never healthy.

They are keeping 8 in the box, they are simply daring Cam to throw the ball while maintaining a spy on him. They also can roll coverage to Olsen or to KB, knowing that he isn't going to come off of them.

Can't blame Shula for this, he has a couple bad call per game but people really are just exaggerating how bad they assume he is. I'm more pissed at drop passes, oline play, dumb flags, bad reads, holding the ball too long, ect then play calling

Sorry but calling a pass play on 1st and goal at the 1 should get you fired...

For some reason they are locking on to only one or two guys from the snap.  I've noticed it from the first game on and it's only getting worse.

Me too as well in both of the home games with the Vikings and 49ers and got blasted for saying it. At the game you can see so much more than on tv

the open receivers were totally disgusted the ball was not thrown to them vs being thrown into double coverage

i don't know how much of it is newton or Shula but it needs to be fixed and in those instances Newton had time to throw

Last year with KB being out, everyone focused on stopping Olsen.   That allowed a lot more one on one match up's on the outside.  It also accounted for that safety coming down into the Box with the single highs that he had to basically cover Olsen.

This year people are blitzing and hoping the LB can hold on Olsen (which they can't).   Our offense has stagnated because Olsen isn't the first read.  KB is a good WR, maybe top 15.   Olsen is a great tight end, top 3.  The more we focus on Olsen, the better the offense will be.

We so wanted to show how much better we were as an offense by focusing on our WR growth, we forgot what made us good  last year.  Olsen's mismatch and Ginn's speed.
