Mike and Mike In The Morning: Quarterbacks being a leader...

From the mouths of two former NFL players. Mike Golic and Mark Schlereth. They both said that a quarterback has to be a leader on the field and the players have to believe that he can get it done, lead the team under pressure, and convert third downs, etc.

Mike Green asked them does a quarterback have to be the leader off the field. They both answered no. That there are other leaders off the field telling players how they should play, etc. and it doesn't have to be the Quarterback. Schlereth and Golic brought up Marino as someone who wasn't a leader off the field. They brought up Ray Lewis when they won the Super Bowl and said Dilfer certaintly wasn't the leader in the locker room. Both said the quarterback just has to be someone you can rely on on the football field as the guy that can get it done and doesn't have to be the leader off the field.

Hmm, seems like we've got it ass backwards. Yet any time someone brings up anything bad about Delhomme here, all I hear is this "well he's a leader in the locker room" crap to support why he keeps sucking it up on the field.

Is there anything out there from a Panther or a coach that suggests they don't feel like Jake can get it done when the game is on the line? We all know about the Steve Smith comment, and he explained that. But even with that one instance, has there been any other player who's come forward with anything but praise for Jake's leadership on the field since 2003?

The part that stuck out to me is when they said the "defense has to believe that if they give that ball back to the QB he will lead the team to victory"

If that is anywhere close to true, I can see why we have lackluster effort on D sometimes.

Personally I would like to say I would go balls out 100% of the time but if it came down to it and I was on the Panthers D, I have to admit I have my doubts about giving it my all in hopes of getting it back in the hands of Jake Delhomme.

Sad, but just being honest. I don't forgive them for it just because Jake is in a slump but I can see it happening based on Rock Hoover's comment.

EDIT: I sincerely doubt that any Panther Player will ever come out and throw jake under the bus.

When he's under-center and pointing out defenders and such, the team is listening, and they look like they are listening intently.

I absolutely believe they trust him. I also absolutely believe it's a good idea to do so (to trust him).

Well, I don't think they would want to do so. I think they like the guy and I don't believe they think he is the problem at all.

i don't care if every single player in the locker room would follow him into hell, if he's making a habit out of 4+ interception games, they're just going to have to deal with him not playing.

that's pretty much the way i feel about foxy. it's great that the team is so devoted to these two guys but you play to win the game.

if you can't consistently win with what you've got then

1) get someone in who will help you do it

2) cut loose anyone that is keeping you from it.

I've never heard of Jake being the locker room leader, only the leader on the field. I would say Chris Harris is probably the locker room leader.

It is a very big stage Monday night, probably the biggest until the game against Minn. in December.

Let see how the team does. We'll see pretty quickly, or not, under that spotlight, who the leaders are on this team.

I do not believe, that if the team continues to falter on the big stage, that JR will hesitate, one second, in pulling the trigger after Jan 3rd.

I am honestly expecting a loss. Don't like to expect that. If it happens, it happens, I just pray for a non-humilating loss. I can't stomach the post morteum on the sports outlets.

Just to clarify, when they said being a leader on the field, they meant the QB has to be the person the team can rely on and come through during pressure. Not whining to the refs after every play, yelling, or pointing to the direction a receiver was supposed to go when he makes a bad throw.
