Collapse of the running game has exposed Cam's weaknesses as a passer

Nope, and I fully expect Cam to follow right down that path...those guys rarely change at this point.

You can win with that type QB....sometimes they can just be too physically imposing....but it's typically a roller coaster ride.

Just buckle up and try to enjoy it, that's the best way to handle it.

Elway is another QB I've frequently compared to Newton.

I really hope Newton doesn't follow Elway's Super Bowl path, though.  I'd hate to have to sit through that.

The more I watch Cam the less I think it's touch that is his issue but lack of anticipation. You give him a set spot to throw it to and he can get it there, even if he has to loft it a bit. He just doesn't do well when it comes to believing his receivers see what he sees and throwing it up hoping they react properly. It is one of the reasons I would love to see him in a west coast offense. So much of it is scripted and based off timing that it would help Cam immensely. People bitch about his short accuracy and so much of that is because he throws balls one way and his receivers cut or lean or tilt the other. The entire offense is just out of sync.

I've never been a fan of Newton running a West Coast offense, primarily because of his short passing but also because the scheme could expose him to more hits.

The timing aspect is a valid point though.

Same here.  We just kinda picked a bad time to have a good QB in the NFC.

There are some legit good QB's in the NFC right now, much like it was in the 2000's with the AFC.

Cam, Rodgers, Stafford (possibly), Ryan, Brees, Winston, Wilson, etc....

I think the OP makes some valid points. Of course as usual the conversation breaks down into "its not cam's fault, its gettleman, rivera, shula, etc." followed quickly with "cam is the only good thing about the panthers so quit attacking him", which leads ultimately to "op hates black qbs and op is a racist".

I'd like to know what the resident gurus think we should do for our offense going forward.

Our offense was successful in prior years due to a fear Cam may run for 30 yards at any time.  Defenses had to keep a linebacker or two around just in case Cam took off.  This allowed our offensive line to block long enough that very large wrs running deeper routes could get a little separation - playing into cam's other strength - the long pass. Huge receivers with a little separation matched up against little corners is a winning combination for us.

But defenses have adjusted.  They no longer worry about Cam taking off for 30 yards.  Everyone now knows you can hit Cam in the head with no repercussions.  Since he's now mostly staying in the pocket - more blitzes are coming.  This does not allow time for receivers to get open. The panthers injury-riddled line just can't give him the time he needs.  Maybe the 'Oher-Norwell-Kalil-Turner-Remmers' line would buy him some extra time, but the 'Remmers-Norwell-Larsen-Scott-Turner' line is another animal.  You're not just missing key personnel in the correct positions, but you are missing your 10-year veteran center to call out the assignments for the blitzers.

So instead of discussing what we have done, I'd like to get thoughts on what we can do this off-season to get us back to the playoffs.  We can all agree we need a new OC and probably a new QB coach.  And we probably have enough money to extend Short, sign 2 free agent starters / impact players, and our first round draft pick should be a starter as well.  How do we specifically address our needs and maximize the impact these 3 new starters will bring?  What kind of offense do we want to run?  Do we re-tool for more short pass options (not a cam strength right now)?  Do we add more bulk and maybe get Fournette in the first to get a traditional running game moving again, opening up more play action (leaving our safeties and our current DEs in place)?  Do we turn Cam loose and hope he survives to play out his contract?  Do we go all in on defense and try to win 13-7 each week?  What say you?

I want this offense to evolve. We are just plain predictable out there. I want us to open up our playbook. Maybe draft a good TE if there is one available and run some two tight end sets. I want Cam to work on his short passing game. I seen him do it so i know he is capable. Lets just get rid of the read option. I dont care how big Cam is , we shouldn't be exposing him to unnecessary hits or he will have a short career. And please by all means get rid of that fake double spin screen. I dont know what it is called but we used it against Oakland and got a pick 6. I just want us to take another step in offense. Get alittle more creative in playcalling

meh. let any team's running game completely collapse behind an offensive line incapable of blocking pass rushers and any quarterback is going to struggle to make throws. you could also make the argument a higher percentage of his missed passes are short and intermediate tosses under pressure that missed their target due to pressure/hits.

i don't recall cam being chronically bad at those passes this time last year.
