2017 Salary Cap

Let's just say the cap is on the lower end of the above report ($166m). According to Spotrac we'd have approximately $60m in cap space entering the offseason. That's with 41 roster spots filled. While that is a large number, we also have a handful of pending free agents to think about. The players who would likely demand the most money out of those pending free agents are the following:

Kawann Short
Charles Johnson
Mike Remmers
Ted Ginn Jr
Mario Addison
AJ Klein

And out of those names, I'd guess Short, Addison and Klein would be the priorities (not saying the others won't be resigned).

You'd think Addison and Klein would be easy to resign but Addison is having somewhat of a breakout season and Klein could want to go somewhere else for a starting role. I think both are important players to keep around considering our current roster. I really have no idea what price they'll demand.

Short might be the tricky one. His franchise tag is approximately $13.4m. He will probably want a little north of that number in a long-term deal.

With all that considered, we should have a decent amount of spending money. Hopefully there are some decent OT or DE on the market this year. It'll be interested to see how Gettleman approaches this offseason. I literally have no clue what to expect.

I would like to go ahead and share this http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/carolina-panthers/

that is the best website period for cap information. if you look you can see that the panthers go from $12m in dead money this year to $300k next year.

our cap space next year, will be between $40-45m thats a lot of space folks with a projected cap space of nearly $90million in 2018.

Increasing league cap space isn't that helpful for the Panthers. Gettlemen historically has thrived on players who weren't top tier free agents and with more money league wide, there will be more money put into that tier of free agents because other teams will have to money to do so.

Not only that but it inflates players contracts. Look at what happened in the NBA free agency this past offseason.

The only thing it does it makes the players on long-term contract relatively less and less expensive, which does favor the Panthers with Cam, Luke, Greg, and TD all signed long-term.

Spotrac has included the rollover money and cap adjustments from the previous season in their projection. Which is why the number is higher.

He also hasn't been in any position where he can go after the "top tier" guys.

Well he did have some room this past season, as well as the season he franchised Greg Hardy.

It is kind of a fallacy that we had money last year. By the time the tag was rescinded from Josh, all the relevant FAs were already taken. Sure we had that 14mil. We just didn't have anybody to spend it on.

Not sure how you can say we had money from Greg. We basically gave him 13mil to stay home. We did not get that money back, Greg got to keep it all.

So realistically, this will be the first year that Gman will have some money to play with. Going to be interesting to see how this will all work out. Must see tv if you ask me.

It's not like anyone forced Gettleman's hand on how he proceeded with Josh or the signing of Greg Hardy. It's his decision to not do contracts during the season, but instead deal with signing current players, free agents, and draft picks all during the short off-season.

So the fact that he CHOOSES to not to make important decisions at the correct and appropriate times and waits till the last minute to choose the best course of action to go in is an legitimate excuse for him? All the best FAs are first priority, its a GMs job to take action earlier in hoping to acquiring talent to their roster.

I don't think anyone is making an excuse for him. I think two different things are being argued. Everything you're saying is correct. Gettleman screwed up. But that's not the point here.

The point was, he didn't have deep pockets when the big FAs were available because it was tied up with the Norman tag (and yes, that whole situation was a debacle and he is completely the blame). It wasn't as if free agency started and we had all this money laying around and he did nothing. This offseason, even if we tag Short he will have a lot of money to potentially spend. So this will be the first time that, when free agency starts, he will have options.

And maybe the reason he was frustrated was that Norman not negotiating in good faith kept them out of the FA market.

Addison should be resigned, but Klein can be let go with Mayo taking over his role,

I believe offense is taking the majority of the cap due to more  veteran players, if DG wants to create increase the cap room he needs to draft replacement  in this years draft.

    • Cooter, Kurb, others have passed on to glory….  Praise be.
    • Oh good for them! Hope this is the start of a long happy time in their lives here.
    • There was no reason to believe in either Cam or Jake as a top tier elite QB before those seasons either. Cam was an "athletic" QB in most people's minds and his passing skills were open for debate. And there was a bit to that as he was still trying to get that massive power in his arm tamed to be able to put some touch on his passes. And then, he did it. Missiles became bombs, the firing lanes became points of finesse. Cam grew up and leveled up, while still retaining the ability and drive to truck people whenever he wanted. And Jake... no one freaking believed in Jake except Jake himself. He got, and let's be honest with this, one chance in a losing game to make something out of his career. And he rose to the occasion like some kind of mythical hero and continued to do so for the season. He became a true leader for the team, and his gunslinger capabilities rehabbed Moose's career and created Smitty as a force in the league. Smitty went from a barker to a biter. But no one believed in Jake going in. And they trashed him on his way out. Now Bryce... who knows? I've seen some improvement. Maybe he finds his footing. His teammates seem to love and respect him and that means a lot. The game should be moving at his speed now. He has weapons available to him and maybe a defense that doesn't just roll over by the third quarter. And his coach seems to be moving this team in the right direction. Could he do it? It's up to him, if he can find the magic like Jake and Cam did. But don't doubt this, magic is really, really hard to find.
