Deals for Marcell Dareus (BUF) & Fletcher Cox (PHI) raised the financial bar for interior linemen who can rush the pass and stop the run. While Short’s pass rush production is a bit below the aforementioned, he’s arguably the best defensive player set to hit the open market this coming spring. The Panthers are likely prepared to slap a franchise tag (estimated $13.5M) on him as soon as possible.

 

They have him listed as their #1 FA this off-season.

And if that happens then we get a 3rd round comp pick and move on.  I would suggest that you not get emotionally attached to players.

Interesting, would you trade him for #12? I assume that  G-MAN doesn't pay $18.2 million for him, and we have been in the wings.

Those numbers... yikes. It's a coin flip about whether he'll be here long term but my guess:

We will not be getting compensated for KK though.  The team is likely to bring in more FAs than we lose this year.  I expect us to re-sign a number of our FAs and given the salary floor that we have not reached over the past 3 seasons, our hand is actually forced to be very active in FA.

But that's the reality in a salary cap era.  It's just not surfaced until now because most teams cave to the players demands out of desperation.  Dave don't play that.   No emotions involved, only business.   I'm not saying the players shouldn't get their money when they can, just don't expect their current team to fork it over.  As long as they get their money who cares where they get it if that's all that matters?
