Well I found an article from 2007 where there were 22 play callers on the field vs just 10 in the booth.

A bigger disadvantage is not being able to communicate with your qb.

I wonder how that has changed over the years or if it hasn't. I could see more guys coming down on the field with technology and tablets. As for communication with your QB I think that is why they have headphones and telephones

Who is this really. You are making sense and proving some points. Did you take that smart pill this morning?  JK.

Actually good discussion.

Rob Ryan called from the field in New Orleans.

That would almost be a reason to call from the booth. I can see defensive coaches do it more than offensive coaches since defense is read and react and fueled with emotion. Offense seems more cerebral and matchups.

But seems that plenty do it.. I guess they decide whether the pros out weigh the cons and lots of folks are hands on. Wilks and Shula apparently prefer the booth.

Got to agree with you there.

Wilks has worked with most of these position coaches for years.  It's good to know he trusts them to be his eyes and ears on the field.  Gotta love his emphasis on fundamentals and knowing his players.  This next year should be fun for the defense.

It's just actually one of the things that has bothered me for a while. I by no means think Shula is a brilliant offensive mind, but I think he's a pretty good qb coach. He never really seems to have a feel for the game or Cam. That's why to me it makes more sense to have Dorsey the former qb, up in the booth reading the defense and relating to Shula what he sees.

Shula would be a lot better on the field going over things with Cam.

He does look like Denzel. Now all we need is for him to go on a Denzel like tirade on the field. "What are you doing, son? This sh*ts chess, not checkers! Get your head in the game!"

I want him, just once, to walk start going off on some "king kong ain't got nothing on me" rant to Rivera.

That assumes that Dorsey would be better able to see what the defense was doing and give Shula feedback. I am not saying he couldn't, just not saying he would be the best one in the booth. Honestly I don't know....

Well fire Dorsey and get somebody up there you trust. Like Arians said, it has to be someone up there you trust. If you don't trust Dorsey then why is he on the staff?

OCs almost never go down on the field, the ability to see the whole field and see what is unfolding has to be done from the booth.

Actually some of the best play callers do. It's a direct line to the whole team.

I know that the speaker in the QBs helmet gets turned off at 15 seconds, but I can't find where it actually gets turned on. I found you get 10-15 seconds to talk, but nothing specific on when it actually starts.

Either way. 10-15 seconds isn't a whole lot of time to communicate with your QB. Give him a quick note of what you see, then give him the play. Not a whole lot of time to throw much info into it. So IMO, you need an Offensive staff that communicates well together.

Whether the play caller is on the field, or in the booth, you need a staff that can communicate quickly, and succinctly. Which begs the question. If the speaker goes off at 15 seconds, what is Cam doing when he seems to be waiting on a play with 10 seconds left on the clock?
