All these older vet signings on defense is starting to paint the picture of them being brought here to easy the transition of younger players.. Maybe not in the 1st round but 2nd and 3rd will be defensive players who aren't ready to start right away but have alot of talent ..

Example: Obi

If your basing off FA , it's gonna be offense for first 3 picks

DE &S coming in the lower rounds

Maybe a WR or a RB in the 3rd..

But i see these guys working with a guy like OBi and a DE like Carl Lawson.. For one season than retiring.. GMan is always working in the present while keeping the future in mind.

Don't disagree, but I don't think we go S in the first.  My guess is Solomon Thomas, OJ Howard, LF is the order of preference in Rd 1.

I like Adams and Hooker a lot, but historically Gettleman hasn't been willing to allocate big dollars and draft picks to S. And we just got outbid on several safeties.  I take that to mean his strategic view on the position has not changed (though maybe they just really like the draft class).

There are some intriguing S options in round 2/3, including Budda Baker and Jabril Peppers.

My guess is that Howard ends up being the pick in the first.  I think the base offense is moving away from shotgun/zone-read towards 2TE sets with a more traditional run game.  Howard enables us to make that transition.  He's an excellent blocker, which frees up Olsen to run routes - and he's a good pass catcher in his own right.  The beauty of 2TE base personnel is we can effectively run from heavy sets or pass with 4 receivers with the same grouping.  Forces defenses to play more base D and makes us less predictable.  Also gives out weak OTs consistent help in pass pro.

But even if we draft Howard early, I agree that a DE and S are not far behind.

    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
