Simply put anyone can put the highlights up and make him look all pro.  Got that. Video almost solidifies my question.  I saw 3 plays against the run over a course of his career.  Not counting the one where the other defender stalled the play but he got credit for the push out of bounds.

Anyone got some real counter to my question other than a hype video?

Got the Pros and Cons?

They've been discussed at length.  He had more sacks in 3 years than Reggie White or Von Miller had in 4, the only SEC player in history to have 10 or more sacks in 3 straight years, and is top 10 in CFB history in sacks, period, in only 3 years.  He's got great intangibles and is a great team guy.  He's only 20 years old.  He played in the SEC.  He showed up biggest in the biggest games and biggest moments.  He can stop the run, not sure where that rumor started, and even cover, as Mayock raved about.

The only con is that despite having capable measurables equal to the majority of Pro Bowl DE's, he doesn't have circus freak clown show Julius Peppers level measurables, which if he did he wouldn't be in the discussion at 8.

The teams behind us including the Saints are very much hoping GMan thinks like many on this board.

This is a little difficult, because our big board won't be like everyone else's.  It's the ten players who will improve the Panthers the most.  Note that I believe college production means more than the combine or recent injury concerns, so Allen is still up there.

  1. Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
  2. Jonathan Allen, DT/DE, Alabama
  3. Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
  4. Jamal Adams, S, LSU
  5. Soloman Thomas, DE, Stanford
  6. Jabril Peppers, SS, Michigan
  7. Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan
  8. O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
  9. Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
  10. Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State

NFL draft profile does as good as anyone these days- http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/derek-barnett?id=2557984

Look I'm a huuuuuge guy on arm length at every spot( even kicker! ), especially the edges for OTs and DEs/OLBs. Barnett fails there. Along with arm length, I'm a believer in game film too. What Barrent did in the SEC is nothing short of amazing. He truly isn't getting his due prasie, he broke Reggie white all-time Tennessee record. I simply cannot overlook that due to bad athletic numbers. Plus I personally don't buy the "sick" combine stuff, most thought he would test bad. I do not care about pro-days, combine is a even test for all. Pro-days are heavy favored for the players, cause they have home field advantage.

After all that, my problem is, I currently dont have someone better to replace him on #7 on my board. Plus I'm starting to believe he maybe a better fit as 3-4 OLB too.

Thanks for a more educated response.  I can watch videos and being I don't have access to the magazines that I used to read. I go by what I read and Barnett hasn't been a highly discussed player.

I think that there are many on here that like him and many that don't raises red flags for me.

It is impressive with his sack totals and eases some concerns.

Last thing we need to do is grab an overhyped player.

Exactly and the write up concurs.

There could be coordinators who view him as an early down, outside backer in a 3-4 with the ability to put his hand in the ground on sub packages

I picture our war room and our board looking something like this. Dave, after eating the biggest cheese steak he could find, writes this on the board, sits down in the back corner and nods off

Now I know why you just stick to complaining about other people's posts instead of posting anything topic related yourself.

What is the love affair with Barnette?

From what I have heard he is a one dimension DE and terrible against the run.   Yet I see mock after lousy mock having us take him.

Am I misinformed?

yeah he isn't nearly on the level of guys like Taco Charlton and Solomon Thomas that we could realistically get

    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
    • Looks like Darnold should have had at least 3 picks. That'll get ugly in the playoffs eventually. Can't deny his physical talent though. You either have that or you don't. Mike Macdonald is a legit coach.
