So If Fournette Is The Pick In The First Round....

Kevin Greene

Recommended Posts

Life post selecting Leonard Fournette #8, #2 or wherever it may be.

What does Shula do calling plays Sunday? Even more Read Option plays for Cam and the new RB than in past years?

Can Shula resist the temptation to beat his opponents Sundays not by play design but based on the belief physically his players are superior to the defense? The toll on Cam Newton be damned?

Could Leonard Fournette be the worst possible pick for Cam Newton's longevity moving forward?

We become even more conservative.  We select Fournette to reduce Cams running so now we run Fournette on 1st and 2nd and Cam ends up in 3rd and long a lot and still gets sacked.

At the same time Brady is winning Super Bowls without the proverbial "3 down elite back" and he is taking less punishment.

I think he's the best possible pick with Cams long term future in mind. Get a running back that can take all the carries away from Cam.

@Kevin Greene do you remember my old topic about how we needed to stop running Cam back from 2013, it was like 30 pages before it was deleted because it turned pretty nasty. But my point then still holds true, if we continue to run our franchise QB we are flirting with disaster. We need a franchise running back to take the not only the presssure off Cam, but the carries away from him too. And I believe that Fournette is the answer to that problem. So honestly I would have no problem trading our entire draft this year if it meant we get Fournette because we I honestly believe his short and long term impact would be tremendous.

You can't compare our system to the patriots, several teams in the NFL have tried to imitate it over the years and have fail miserably. Them

having the best QB and Coach in the history of the NFL coupled with one of the worst divisions in the NFL over the same time has more to do with the patriots continued success than anything else.

I really wasn't trying to compare us to the Patriots, it was more of a reference to this idea that you protect your QB more by running the ball.

You protect your QB by staying out of predictable throwing situations.  I have this fear that if we draft Fournette we will become more conservative and predictable.

Its not an idea, its factual its something that has been long proven to work, just watch the 2008 panthers for the last time we used this to great effect, jake was terrible that year, but we still ended up the 2 seed in the NFC because of Stew and Williams. Or for a much more recent reference the 2016 cowboys, Prescott isnt half the player he was last year without Elliot and a lot of teams have taken notice.

Its why there is a bidding war for Fournette, do you think teams would be considering throwing away their entire draft for something that doesn't work? hardly, if anything I consider a solid running game a much more predicable and reliable method of QB protection.

Those who buy this hyperbole about the 'generational talent' before he's even played an NFL down cannot conceive that anything could possibly go wrong with this selection. Even though I don't agree with them I hope that they are right.

Heck any player could turn into a bust, there are no sure things in the NFL.  I'll take my chances with Fournette though

Shula gonna Shula regardless. I think if nothing else he's proven he's not gonna adjust to his personnel. If we were to draft McCaffrey he'd be running up the middle for 1 yard losses as much as anything else. Better to get another guy like Cam that is talented enough to compensate for OC incompetence.

That's true and its fair enough. Hell, I hope we draft Fournette just cos I'm curious to see if hes a fraction of the player some people say. Unquestionably his combination of weight and speed is impressive. Barring injury he has all the tools to do well. I just find 'generational' a bit excessive. I consider generational players to be like LT and Walter Payton. Not just good but legendary. It's a title to confer on someone after their career not before.

It's just funny to me that people can get so locked into their 'prospect' that the projection turns into off-the-chart platitudes. I worry about the likes of Sanjay if this draft doesn't work out for him....

    • I've really only begun to pay attention this week being that training camp is looming, so I was personally caught off guard by the fact that Nic Scourton remains unsigned. That's not necessarily bad news, but it's not necessarily good news either. Apparently it's a thing with this year's draft class. "Of the 32 players selected in the second-round, 30 remained unsigned and the clock is ticking. "Already we've seen one second-round pick hold out from the start of training camp with that player being Los Angeles Chargers' wide receiver Tre Harris. Harris did not report with the rest of the Chargers' rookies on Saturday due to his contract situation, a issue that could impact nearly every other team in the league. "For the Panthers, defensive end Nic Scourton is the player to watch for when rookies start showing back up to the team facilities next week. "The 51st overall pick is one of the 30 second-rounders who has yet to sign their rookie contract and the reason why is due to the other two that have actually signed. "Cleveland Browns' linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans' wide receiver Jayden Higgins each signed fully guaranteed contracts as the first and second players drafted in the second-round. Prior to this year, second-round picks never received a fully guaranteed deal, only players selected in the first-round." https://atozsports.com/nfl/carolina-panthers-news/panthers-nic-scourton-contract-second-round-pick-training-camp-hold-out-tre-harris/ So, I suppose we'll see what's what pretty soon. It's definitely something to monitor.
    • overwhelming majority of kids in travel ball aren't getting scholarships though because most teams are rec caliber (and not watched by scouts)    and parents/leagues sort of helped create this system and narrative IMO where travel ball is now oversaturated and most of it is simply expensive rec ball.  is travel beneficial for some athletes to get more exposure? Sure. The ones travel actually existed for.   I still think travel has expanded entirely too broad at this stage......where they will now have 5 teams per year in your backyard area pending they can get parents to write those checks.   Ain't no scout ever laying eyes on 90%+ of the kids in travel ball at this stage of where it has morphed into.
    • Im really curious to see how the defense is going to look once its playing with some leads.
