ex-GM Michael Lombardi on Gettleman situation

I think what happens is Gettleman didn’t have the owner buying in. Typically, the way ownership should run is: [The GM’s] running the team. I’m letting him run the team. It was hard for [Patriots owner] Robert Kraft to lose Vince Wilfork. He loved him as a player. He adored him. But he’s given [Patriots coach Bill] Belichick the autonomy to run the team, and Bill felt it was in their best interest was to make a contract that was worthwhile to the Patriots, and Vince didn’t want to take it. And I think [Kraft] gives [Belichick] that authority, and once Kraft steps over that authority … there’s dissension within the ranks. You have to add another layer into this, too: Ron Rivera. Ron Rivera was hired by Marty Hurney

I think Hurney will end up getting an Olsen contract done. He’ll get Thomas Davis a contract. I believe they’ll go through the procedures of looking for somebody else … but at the end of the day, I think Jerry Richardson really likes Marty Hurney. I think he likes the way he treats the players, and that’s important to him. Do I think they’re going to continue to win and continue to get good players? I’m not sure of that, because I think Dave Gettleman was really good at his job.

this is my intuition speaking atp but this whole thing just reeks. gettleman is seemingly fired out of nowhere and in less than two days, they bring in hurney to drive the bus "for now". i'm not ready to call collusion yet but if something leaks about there being an effort to push him out, i won't be surprised.

and to let Oher go. yes, we knew that was going to happen, but to save it until Hurney took over?  yeah, this is higher than the mile high sh!t that lost 50.

The players LOVED Hurney---that is the problem.  I remember when he re-signed DelHomme after Tommy John surgery at about twice his market value...WHen he had to cut him a year later, he flew to Chicago to meet with Jake's agent and they wept...He overpaid for RBs when their stock was down--he had about $76m and re-signed the core of teams that went 4-12 and 6-10.  He created cap hell for us, and the minute we get out of it, here he comes back to "save the day."  I assure you, He will mortgage the future again to win now, so he can have the interim status removed.

I get a player's coach. I do not get a player's GM.  Heck, a Super Bowl and 3 playoff appearances--trash that because the players want more money and think their contract is no longer fair.

When we are back in cap hell, when we have signed Mike Adams to a 5-year contract, when we are back to 4--12 and 6-10 streaks, maybe Jerry will realize that MH is a dumbass ex-reporter who has sucked his entire career.

i don't know exactly what a jiggling sack of gold doubloons sounds like, but i bet that's what the players hear when he walks down the hallway.

you nailed it. he's very popular with the players. so much so that they all tweeted about how they were displeased that he was let go and couldn't understand it. while they were 1-5. lol.

the panthers were back to 6-10 last year, and another top 10 pick added to this franchise.

the panthers have been out of cap hell since 2014 before he tagged Greg Hardy. tho even after the tag Dave had enough to sign an entire new WR corps and defensive backfield, which was necessary after cutting or letting walk so many players.

remember folks the cap increased 44 million, by over 10 million per year under dave. on the other hand during hurneys last four seasons the cap actually went down.

That's a bs lie that has been disproven already.

The cap, year by year since Hurney first got the job:

2016     $155.27 million
2015     $143.28 million
2014     $133 million
2013     $123 million
2012     $120.6 million
2011     $120 million
2010     Uncapped
2009     $123 million
2008     $116 million
2007     $109 million
2006     $102 million
2005     $85.5 million
2004     $80.582 million
2003     $75.007 million
2002     $71.101 million

The cap from 2013 to 2016 (The Gettleman years) went up by around 35 million.  Over Hurney's time at GM, it increased by almost 50 million.  And that's not even counting the uncapped year.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
