Falcons pull a Marty Hurney. Make Devonta Freeman highest paid RB in the League

Coleman could be the better back if given the opportunity.

Anyway, like I said, the main thing that we should keep our eye on is whether this is the true beginning of the resetting of the market for RBs. It does have implications for us one way or another if McCaffrey balls out.

Here come the "no cap space crew" then this offseason when Atlanta is still signing people the same people will be asking how

Freeman is 25, really not bad of a contract for what he brings to the table for them

You already know. We go through it every offseason with other teams.

He would have had to do it for another season before I paid him that. He's only going into his fourth year (and his rookie year doesn't even really count). He's good, but so are a lot of other backs (and maybe even Tevin Coleman).

This could be the resetting of the market. If Le' Bell (I just made that up) stays healthy this year, then there is no way he isn't getting paid higher than Freeman next season.

If CMC's ball comes close to the hype, then we'll be paying him handsomely in a few years. There's just no way to get around it.

There are over a dozen backs (not including the rookies this year or even some guys from last year like Henry because of not enough sample size but I bet a fair amount will end up better than him) that I'd rather have than Freeman. Silly to make him even top 5 paid. Keeping him would be worthwhile for them, sure. But not at nearly what they're paying him. Dumb move.

We have 5 years of McC on set salary. Nothing happening with RBs now will have an impact. What happens with RBs in 3-4 years will.

Most of the issues regarding his contract being good or bad aren't being discussed. The total deal is much less important that the guaranteed money and how it pays out. His guaranteed money is roughly 26 million out of the 43 million. 22 million is the signing bonus. The majority will be paid out over the first 3 years which actually means his cap hit could be much higher than the average  contract being front loaded instead of backloaded. It also means they might not be tied to him for more than 3 years if he drops off. Haven't seen the cap numbers yet.

Just looking down the road a piece. If CMC becomes the all-purpose  monster for his first three seasons, I can easily see us paying him (and perhaps justifiably so). You lock generational talents up early, especially a family-centric organization like this one. It's going to depend upon CMC.

I think that it's kind of a stretch to say that signings today won't affect signings even five years from now. These contracts aren't signed on an island. You can't look at most of these things in and of themselves, you have to look at trends. The pay for RBs is trending up.

My question is whether he really should be the number one RB. Is he a true every-down back?

I have my doubts.

Wait wait wait, you don't think Freeman is an every down back but you think Coleman is better??? LOL

Coleman wouldn't make it pass week 8 if he got Freeman's workload. Freeman is the one softening up the defense for Coleman to do his thing

Over a dozen backs really? Please name all of them. Freeman is the only RB to go over 1000 yards in the last two years and has a combined 27 touchdowns.

His feet and cut back ability are elite along with his pass catching ability out of the backfield.

Your lack of football---err, personnel knowledge rears its head so much around this place. I am not going to play Gooby's World of Delusions vs. Reality Wac-A-Mole with you today.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
