A possible name to keep an eye out for in the coming months is Matt Elliott

Doing my best not to do a NJPanthers12 impression here, but...

I have it on good authority Matt Elliott is a name being considered in the GM hunt. He's a former Panthers guard/tackle (Lego Man, anyone?) who played for the Redskins to start his career in the early nineties. He's stayed close to Richardson since then, known in inner circles as one of the Panthers alum closest to JR, moreso than even Steve Smith and Charles Johnson.

Today he had a long lunch with JR and followed it with a longer meeting with Marty Hurney. Rumors are he's being interviewed for a staff position high in the front office as a guy who's got the ability to analyze talent and potentially a replacement for Hurney (though you imagine a guy like him would take an assistant role before stepping into anything major.) This would be a good addition to a front office that desperately needs talent analytics but it's also scary to imagine JR installing a good pal with no real GM experience to speak of (such as Marty Hurney.)

Time will tell, but it's an interesting thing to keep an eye out for as the season progresses.

Phil, you coming to Boston for the Pats game?

I'd love to, but everything depends on my schedule this fall. I'll be done the film I'm working on by the end of September but I'll be working on festival circuits through next spring so it's gonna be tough.

Speaking of which, where/how will I be able to see the film up in the northeast? Would love to see it on the big screen somehow.

I remember Elliott. He had a rep for being super intelligent.

That said, from what I've been able to find, he has no actual scouting or talent evaluation experience other than working as a college football analyst/commentator.

If he's being looked at for something higher than a college scouting job...oy.

He has a couple HUGE pluses on that he's a former player and played at Carolina. Over the years I grown to believe a big reason Ron got the HC gig, he was a former player. Honestly, i want a younger gettleman, that has a great idea of what the future NFL will be.

Ryan Cowden and Trent Kirchner both have associations with the team and have had not only experience in scouting and talent evaluation, but have had genuine success at it.

Much as I liked Elliott when he was here, no way would I promote him over either of those guys.

Is ryan Cowden the guy from san fan? If that's him he held a high role during the end of the Harbaugh era. Who knows whats in store. I believe if Jerry is still in charge, the job will require unique skills. For one just like gettleman, you can't fire anyone and hire your own staff. Any self-respecting potential GM wouldn't give Carolina any time if that's the case. Have to settle for a desperate yes-man, wait.......wait a minute..... I believe the search is OVER.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
