Wide Receivers !

We will see. I'm sure they want Byrd to take the spot since they have invested 3 years to train him, so he's going to get the opportunities over the younger guys. Bersin has looked pretty darn good except for getting nicked up two weeks in a row though.

That's part of the reason I can't get down with Sunshine. He has 24 receptions in his career to go along with 3 fumbles. And he's turning into the wide receiver version of Romo. Every time he takes a shot, he's out for at least a week.

Honestly, I think Berson should come on as an assistant coach of something.

Based on preseason games, its hard to justify keeping Shephard.

I'm in the same camp with you.  I can't figure out what the deal is with Shepard.  He has been a non factor so far.  I can't even recall a special teams play this supposed ace has made yet either.

i think only solidified spot is KB at 1.  It looks like the Panthers are really trying to get Samuel involved, this makes me think he is going to be on the field most of the time.  Funch and Shep will be rotated in and out based on situation.  I think Byrd makes the team for return purposes, as much as CMC will be involved in the offense I dont see him returning punts the entire season.  I also think there is a WR who will make the team who is not on the team, hopefully a vet.

Clay has already out played Byrd as a returner so I wouldn't count on that being the key factor that solidifies his place on the team.

What makes you say that? Only maybe one or two of our punt returns this entire preseason has been of any note.

Tis true the special teams overall hasn't been anywhere near special.  Mainly because old Ron wants to teach these young guys a lesson on what happens when you bring the ball out of the end zone, his words.  You start to see who can make something out of nothing which is difficult because the overall unit isn't helping.  Looking at it from that perspective it appears Clay is doing better.

He has a better juke than Byrd and appears to be as fast if not faster in pads.  If you're a stat geek compare their return yards, which I haven't because I'm not that attached to either guy, and I would bet their not much different.  Byrd has had 2 years to perfect his game and Clay has been here only a couple months and is looking better.

Forgive me if I don't pull for one over the other because all I care about is the W baby, doesn't matter who helps get it.  Just don't sleep on Clay.

Not a stat nerd. Stats don't often tell the whole story. For all I know, Clay has looked considerably better than Byrd or anyone else, but like you stated, the guys blocking haven't given them much of a chance to break off anything.

Given the returns we've had, no one looks clearly better than anyone else to me. I mean, no one looks like Dante Hall out there, but they haven't muffed a catch, and they've all gotten positive yards. I too, want the best man to make it. From my perspective, it just seems to be Byrd.

I think if Byrd is a non factor next week then he has no shot at making the team. I also think they're gonna look at trading Funchess for anything worthwhile. That being said I assume he starts the season with us so

KB/Samuel/Funchess/Sheppard/Clay and maybe Bersin

Byrd and Frazier on the practice squad

Good question...but it is hard to rank them because they have different skill sets for different roles.

I am going to get some crazy comments in a moment, but please allow me to reflectively pontificate by thinking about the recent past in an effort to avoid repeating my redundancy:

1. Bersin has had a great camp, from what I hear.

2. Funchess is not playing that well and has not for some time.

3. At some point, Bersin may take Funchess' spot as the second big WR.

Big WR: KB, Funchess, Sheperd (where has he been?)  Bersin

Small WR:  Byrd and Samuel

81 looked good last night.
