One cut day = bad football

Last night we got treated to college-level football with a few pros slipped in here and there.  Today there are going to be about 1,000 cuts, and the coaching staff needs to sift through all of them and see which ones may fit the Panthers, doing in a week what they used to have three for.  Some of the ones we find on the scrap heap may actually be good enough to merit playing time, but not next Sunday because there isn't going to be enough time to get them in the game plan.

Who thought this was a good idea again?

Players interviewed about it didn't seem to mind. Vets knew they didn't have to play as much or at all and found it a relief. It has a redeeming quality to them.

4th game is always unbearable to watch regardless IMO.

Also we get to see just exactly why the udfa we loved so much has no chance in NFL

A point I heard brought up is that a preseason injury at one position at this time of year is less likely to cause the team to cut a person elsewhere they might honestly like to see more of in order to fill a whole. While there may be real side effects there must have been a reason to try this out and why it was suggested and voted on.

Agree. From all the interviews I heard, everyone really seem to like the change.

In other news -  anyone else get the feeling that this place is going to go full meshuggeneh with 1,100 or so free agents hitting the open market on the same day. Tons of "Should we sign <insert name here>?" threads.

It isn't a good idea at all. The first round of cuts was always the guys that had no chance of making the roster no matter what they did. It was the respectful thing to do, giving them more of a chance to maybe catch on somewhere else and not waste any more of their time.

It's a bad idea from another standpoint as well:

By letting guys go early it gives those remaining more opportunities for reps and compete to make the 53.  Having "camp bodies" just hang around longer than they should takes away much needed time from rookies, good UDFAs, and bubble guys to get reps and work on timing.

I like it. In other years, some starters would play last night ( maybe a series or 2). But because the roster still had 90 guys, they could play all the backups the whole game. This did two things for me. Ensured no starters got injured (outside of Samuel but he needed the reps). And it allowed the bottom of the roster to really go out one last time and show what they could do. Not just a few plays but the whole game. And guys like Boulware could really relish their final plays on an NFL field. He absolutely has no shot at even the PS. I'm all for the change.

I'm not a fan.

Was thinking about that too.

Oy.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
