Kicking choice is "a fluid process"

So if Gettleman can't be credited with any of this year's success (if it happens) how is it that Hurney can be said to have played any role in Gettleman's first few seasons here?

You can't have it both ways.

I didn't say he shouldn't get any credit, just not most of it.

If we get to where we want to be, it will be because the GMs actually listened to what the coaches needed and wanted. But it's the coaches who are actually orchestrating the show, and the HC with the ultimate responsibility of maximizing the tools he has to work with, so frankly he should get most of the credit.

My biggest questions about this team haven't been about Rivera for the past few years, they've been about our GM's willingness to definitively address the weaknesses---some of them decidedly blaring---that keep the team from truly taking the next step into the tier of teams that always seem to be in contention no matter what. Their GMs seem to always have their finger on the pulse of their team and make moves to keep themselves afloat.

Here is the "Fluid Plan" Let Gano Fail in game one and cut him. He misses 1 FG in the first game and he is done. That is it. If they had decent offers for Gano a Kicker they would have made them already. They haven't had anything but junk offered for him and to be honest I might have even done that if I was the GM. So let's just let Gano fail on his own and go with the Rookie.

Pretty much.

Hurney never went into offseasons with any sort of long term plan.  His whole MO was reacting as he went along. Then came the day when Jerry Richardson sat him down and asked him how he was going to fix a team that was off to a horrible start, and Hurney answered that he didn't know.  That was what got him fired from the job the first time.

How you bring somebody back after that is beyond me.

Exactly. And I don't believe for a second that Hurney magically learned from his mistakes and gained an eye for talent, or figured out how to handle cap and build a COMPLETE team like G-man. If Hurney is GM after the season (like a lot of us are predicting), I give it 2 years until he has us right where he left us.

Again...not one of us knows how this will play out even though people are acting as if they do.

This is true, but if it looks like a duck, quack like a duck, then...

Hurney has kept 2 kickers before. Personally, I don't think anybody offered no more than a 7th for Gano and Hurney seems to think he's worth more than that. We can save 3.2 mil from cutting him. Injuries happen during the season, that poo can help

Frankly, when it comes to personnel, the last thing I want is our GM listening to Ron Rivera.

Back when we had Beane as an interim GM is when Rivera had the most say in personnel.  It wasn't pretty.

As we've stated before, Rivera has too great an appreciation for vets even well past their prime (like Derek Anderson) and gives too much credit to "try hard" guys with less talent (remember how much he liked Sione Fua?)

Heard an interview with a long time successful GM (forget which one) who said he was okay with coaches telling him what kind of players they needed but it was best if their involvement in the process stopped there.  He didn't like having coaches involved in choosing the actual guys because they tended to fall in love with guys off of a single highlight or a single game performance.  They weren't good at seeing the big picture.

Player evaluation is just not Rivera's strong suit.

Ask him what kind of players he wants?  Fine.

Involve him in the process of selecting them?  Hell no!

Unless they thought they could hold out for a better offer.

In the meantime, guys like Nick novak come available and the team that was ready to make us a half-decent offer pulls it and signs him or someone else.  We wind up cutting Gano or Butker and getting nothing in return.

That's what I fear is happening.

Kicker injuries don't happen as frequently as injuries at other positions.

PFT

Hurney...

Rivera...

"I'm leaning toward the experienced guy" could be a virtual mantra for Rivera.

That's not to say that Ron never chooses the younger option. The unfortunate truth though is that it when it comes to personnel, whichever option he chooses tends to be the wrong one.

Yes it's fluid, it's going to swirl right down the toilet if Gano kicks for us all season.

I'm not going to bash Hurney for the bottom of the roster that's not even finished anyway, but Gettleman deserves a TON of credit for setting this team up for long term success. We probably have the best two deep DT rotation in football because of him. Without that, this is a .500 team, at best.

i remember the days of trying to get myself excited about marlon favorite and tank tyler

e:

lol just checked wikipedia to see what marlon favorite was up to after he left the panthers:

Nick Novak was cut by the Texans. He had a far superior 2016 to Gano. Why would anyone trade for a kicker who had a crappy year when Lambo and Novak are available? Cut Gano.

Is Austin Sefarian-Jenkins any good? Apparently he was a 2nd round TE before being cut by the Jets...

A mature, motivated ASJ would be awesome.

But he's never been more than an immature turd.
