Our plays are not vanilla in the first place. We use all kinds of different formations and different blocking

Im sorry wrong term... play calling...the idea of we going smash you in the mouth by running str8 up the middle handed us losses..so msybe not play design but playcalling was very vanilla..lets see what he calls now since we now have quickness, speed and power lets see if he can make the correct playcall with the right personel. He may have fancy play designs but what good does it do when it is called at the wrong time.

The Bengals offense has had a ton of talent, and a good OL before this year and they've never been much to write home about. Do you like this guy as an OC or just connecting dots?

Actually more as a QB coach than as an OC. Carson Palmer developed well under Zampese.

That said , I might give him a shot at OC. He wouldn't be the first OC to do bad with his first team but thrive with the next.

I skimmed through a few Bengals boards about Zampese. You always take stuff on boards with a grain of salt but hating one's OC is all but universal, apparently:

Russian hackers posted Bengals OC Ken Zampese's super secret playbook on the dark web......

He now has 10 days to get it another 4 plays installed....

This was the right move. I'm surprised they actually did it. You couldn't get a better HC than Marvin mid season, but a ham sandwich will be a better OC than Zampese. Even choosing plays at random out of a hat would be better.

I heard Lap on the radio earlier today with Dan Hoard mentioning that Zampese's playcalling drove him crazy because he was being reactionary to what the defense was showing him rather than punching first. He also said that Zampese had way too many plays for various situations and that the offense would be better served by simplifying things.

Good get rid of that stupid RB circus they got going on, it doesn't work!

Zampese is showing why he never got an opportunity to be an OC. He has no idea what to do with the "talent" and has failed to build an identity as a playcaller.

Last year he was just picking random plays from Hue's and Grudens playbook. I don't know what today was but there was still no rhyme or reason behind the calls.

Zampese picks play at random from his clipboard. Yeah he still used a clipboard. He trashed his iPad because "That's the way Iv been doing it all my life." Actually that's a good metaphor for his play call style.

Zampese calls plays like he's in the 60s but the rest of the league is in 2017. Iv never seen an easier offense to defend

Where were the waggles? What about sprint outs? Why did we wait until late in the 3rd to run a HB screen? Why did we show the reverse action three times, but never actually use it? Why was Cedric left on an island without any help from a TE? What about max protect shot plays early to back the defense off to open up the quick passing game? I have said all off season a bad lineman or two can be overcome with scheme, the chargers literally do it every year, but there didn't seem to be any help from the coordinator schematically to help this team over come it's deficiencies.

The Bengals have fired Ken Zampese.

He's a guy who interviewed here previously, and comes from a solid background (his dad is Norv Turner's mentor).

At the very least, I'd love to see him brought aboard in a consultant role. He's had plenty of success as a QB coach.

Mind you, nothing's gonna happen, but if you want something to pin false hopes on, here ya go :(

Now if we're talking Ernie Zampese..........

Shula is proven, he has had a #1 offense in this league.  Dont get the total hate by some fans.

This is based on a Supreme athlete of the talent level Cam possesses and an offense simply more skilled than the opponent. Not some untouchable scheme. To run a read option you have to be more talented than the opponent.

I am waiting but I am not holding my breath on the breakout of our offense.

We have the talent to make life miserable for defense.  Very miserable.  We should be able to drive the length of the field and not rely on the defense to give you a short field.   We have yet driven the field and scored a touchdown.

Cam was rusty so I'll give game one a wash for Shula.  He has some plays for CMC but other than that the plays called looked eerily like last year.

I'd like a new QB coach for sure. I'm far from thrilled with Cam's development with Dorsey. His mechanics haven't improved at all and '14 and '16 were really really rough years from him in terms of decision making. Some of the blame of course goes to Cam but ultimately the coaches need to take a ton of responsibility as well.
