The Score (LOL): 5 teams that are likely already regretting their big-name FA signing

Although I am laughing at a journalistic style error and a grammatical error at thescore.com (specifically using the numeral 5 as opposed to the word, and using "a unimposing"), I do think that they might have hit the nail on the head, at least in the mind of many Panthers fans.  I don't quite know why, but that actually makes me laugh even more, but what the hell are we gonna do now, curse all season:thinking::fear::omg::crying:? I would say that we should all just hope for the best, but I guess that it is en vogue now to hope for just average as it pertains to Matt Kalil. At least that's what I'm hearing now on the Huddle. This is what Panthers fans have come to...(LMAO.gif)

Anyway, I'm getting back to my limited edition Bud Light---you know, the one with the black aluminium bottle with the Panthers logo.

"The Panthers were desperate to improve their offensive line and better protect franchise quarterback Cam Newton this offseason. They must have been, it's the only explanation for why they dropped $55.5 million over five years on Kalil, a former first-rounder who has never come close to living up to his pre-draft hype.

In Week 1, facing a unimposing San Francisco 49ers defensive front, Newton was mostly kept clean by his offensive line. However, that changed in Week 2, with the Buffalo Bills going at Kalil all game long and sacking Newton six total times and hitting him another seven.

The Panthers chalked it up to a lack of chemistry between Kalil and Newton, but the left tackle is just playing at his usual level. Carolina still has the same problems on the offensive line and a lot less change in the bank."

did they seriously? "Listen it's a process, Cam just needs to develop some chemistry so he knows when the defensive end is about to run full speed untouched into his blind side. You might even say this is Cam's fault."

Yeah, I can't blame Gettleman for signing Kalil given we HAD to do something. There was always a risk it wouldn't work out.

A good portion of the league is struggling to find quality OL, especially tackles. It seems to be a growing concern as far as affecting the overall quality of the NFL product.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me to see the league change the rules to help the OL's out league-wide, similar to the rule changes they made in 1978 that allowed for OL to use extended arms and open hands when blocking.

Yeah, Rivera actually did offer up that drivel.

Gettleman doesn't get a pass in any shape, fashion or form.

No he doesn't. And I've defended him on many issues. But as I said two minutes after his signing was announced. This is a dark day in Panthers history. No logical reason to sign Kalil over Whitworth, or even Reiff. Wait until that 9.6M cap hit costs us Star or Norwell.

Two weeks in. Ryan Kalil wasn't playing, and it showed in the lack of communication.

TheRiotReport red zone GIF

On the first play, Matt Kalil just completely fails to block the edge rusher allowing quick pressure on Cam and so prevents the easy completion to McCaffrey. While this might look like ineptitude on Kalil’s part - something that cannot completely be ruled out - it is far more likely to be a failure to communicate responsibilities, with Kalil thinking that McCaffrey was meant to be blocking the edge defender.

However, if we only count weeks 1 and 2 without considering the other variables, Matt Kalil's worse than Oher, and it's not even close. But there's a reason the rest of the season is left to play. Let's see how it plays out with everyone healthy and the line developing chemistry.

I mean I thought he did alright against SF. Some here were singing his praises.

Also it's been two games and he just went up against one if the best d-lines in football. There were moments where Cam had all day to throw. He  isn't the problem at this point to me. Better than fuggin Remmers.

Remmers has been better than him for most of his career. Kalil was almost Bell level bad in Minnesota.

    • You've got to constantly invest in the OL. The mantra pay tackles, draft guards/centers is true for a reason. Every 2 years we should be investing a round 2 or 3 pick in a starting guard unless we hit an all pro guy. Center, I lean more towards keeping the franchise guy than rotating him out as long as the price tag come contract time isn't insane. At least one day 3 pick needs to go to a guard or tackle every year churning the backup positions. Almost 18% of our team is OL. Investing at least 1 pick a year is just good business. That roster area needs to constantly be churning to try and keep low cost, highest possible quality talent.
    • If you have watched Stroud the past couple of seasons, I think his confidence well has been leaking for some time now. If you look at his overall production it has decline year on year and he just doesn't look comfortable very often. Some of that is loss of OL but it's not like he is getting David Carr'ed. This is the lowest sack rate he has had in his NFL career. It's hard to explain the absolute meltdown he had coming into the postseason. I haven't really seen anything like that other than Jake's one game meltdown and Carson Palmer's wild 2015 two game meltdown(6 TO's against us alone). Both of those QB's didn't last long as NFL starters after that. Not sure what will happen with CJ but I do genuinely question if he is mentally shot. Young's mechanics are unfixable because he(and his team/QB trainer) don't agree with anyone else on his footwork issues. They believe he is doing what will be successful for him.
    • Yes I do remember that. And people say the playbook is not limited.
