My Co-worker is about to need a meat wagon...

So this morning at work, everyone knowing I'm a diehard Panthers fan, were nicely asking about the game tonight and if i was going and as a PSL owner i said absol-freaking-lutely.   Hours later minding my business in my office a co-worker stomps in and i quote says "You know Cam isn't a good quarterback right. He's not a good passer, the only thing he can do is run the ball and hes huge.  Statistics show hes not a good quarterback."  Now this co-worker is old enough to be my father and I said "Oh really, numbers show that huh? How so?  Give me some statistics on how he isn't a good quarterback."  Obviously, not being the "tuned-in" obsessive to a form of sickness I've probably developed for my beloved Panthers, my co-worker then began to mumble about Cam's celebrations, his fashion, his comments, etc.  Everything unrelated to actual stats and X's and O's that take place on the football field.  He then immediately said "I have to take a call"  and i nicely said "Come on back i will show you statistics and even an image that will only take up a moment of your time to crush you so-called "football knowledge"

Here's a list of things only he has accomplished.

Only player with at least 20,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards in the first six seasons of a career.

Only player to record at least 3,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards in five seasons.

Only player to lead an NFL franchise in career passing touchdowns and career rushing touchdowns.

Only quarterback with at least 10 rushing touchdowns in multiple seasons.

Only player with at least 4,000 passing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season.

Only player with multiple seasons of at least 20 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns.

Only player with at least 3,500 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season.

Only player with at least four games of 200 passing yards, 80 rushing yards, multiple passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.

Only player with multiple games of at least 250 passing yards, 100 rushing yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown.

Only player to pass for at least 300 yards, rush for at least 100 yards and score five touchdowns in a game.

Only player with at least 100 rushing yards and five passing touchdowns in a game.

Plus, let's not also forget that Newton holds the NFL records for most career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (48), most games with at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown (34) and most passing yards by a quarterback in their first two games (854).

In Good Company

A foolproof way to gauge a player's greatness is to recognize the company around him. In Newton's case, he's currently sitting among the best of the best going into his seventh season.

Here's how he compares to some of the game's most celebrated quarterbacks, either currently in the Hall of Fame or likely Hall of Fame-bound, who played in at least 75 games with a minimum of 2,000 passing attempts through their first six career campaigns:

I was waking into a store a few weeks ago wearing some panthers gear and an older gentleman stopped me and started chatting a bit and stated he didn't like Cam. He was too cocky. I stated you have to be cocky to be an NFL QB. He sat there for a second and then said yeah you're probably right. Baby boomers don't care for Cam but their reasoning is flawed. I prefer my gladiators to play to the crowd. Panther fans desperately needed Cam more than they realize. He brings excitement and gets the fans cheering like they never have before.

I think it's a generational thing. My dad is 67 and he also doesn't like Cam and hates all the flash and swag. Old guys just don't get it lol.

Helps a lot if you understand there are different kinds of quarterbacks.

Newton is never going to be a Drew Brees / Peyton Manning / Tom Brady type player.  That's just not who he is.  If that's your standard, then you're never going to like Newton because he doesn't play that way.

My most common response to someone saying Newton isn't good is to ask this question:

Was Brett Favre good?

What about John Elway?  Would you consider him a good quarterback?

Those guys are the prototypes for the kind of quarterback you see in Cam Newton.

For Favre, Elway, Newton and others like them, their games are always going to include a misture of "how the hell did he do that" and 'what the hell was he thinking".  They're capable of throwing passes that are as accurate as a laser sighted rifle.  They're also quite capable of missing the broad side of a barn and trusting their own abilities a little too much.  It happens.  get used to it.

Can you win with a quarterback like that?  Favre and Elway's Super Bowl rings say yes.

You just have to understand what you're seeing.

Agree. Don't even humor him with a response. He's ignored reality this long so he's not going to change.

I don't give a rat's ass about stats.  A lot of what makes a football player good isn't statistically measurable.

Stats are for baseball fans. Show me wins.

I'm with Mr. Scot.

Find out who he thinks are great QB's that have played over the past 30 years, then compare notes.

He will likely bring up Favre, or Elway, then you can make him pay a bit.
