Wilks on Luke's condition

Captain Morgan

If this is true.  Thank you Jesus!  Luje deserves a good long hall of fame career.  A truly great person on and off the field.  Losing Luke was a bigger loss than the loss of the game.    Isn't he using a new helmet this season?

I realize the brain is different than the knee but we all thought TD was done after 3 ACLs early in his career. We'll see. Technology advancements have to be made. It should be mandatory before next season

I don’t think there is anyway to prevent some people from concussions. Luke appears to be one of those people.

I had 4-5 concussions in high school and remember each one vividly. 15 years later, I got my last concussion last Friday getting knocked out in a hockey game. My brain and body hasn't been the same this past week.

With that said, as much as I want him to play, I do pray Luke takes it easy and heals.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if he were in concussion protocol I don’t think he’d be at meetings today?

I just scanned the protocol and am not seeing a specific prohibition about team meetings. Surprisingly, there's fair amount of discretion in it. However, since RR specifically said he is in the protocol, that's evidence that he didn't pass the sideline assessment, which means off to the locker room for more extensive testing. At that point, even if he is at baseline, he still has to go through repeated testing since symptoms can be delayed (note the protocol says over a period of hours, not days). Same day return is strictly prohibited, but after that, stage progress speed is completely within the discretion of the house medical staff and independent consultant. So, theoretically, as long as he can meet all of the stage criteria, he could conceivably zip through them in a few days without any symptoms and no drop below baseline, or emergence of new observed or self reported symptoms. Your interpretation might be different, but that's my take after a brief read of it.

Regardless, despite there being mild, moderate, etc. concussions, there is absolutely no such thing as a good one. I'm neither optimistic nor pessimistic about his short term prognosis. We don't have any details and it's simply too soon. As for reports that he's just fine, I'm reminded of the pic TD posted the next day last year when the same thing was said. Luke was smiling behind Davis giving us a thumbs up, and we all know how that turned out. Long term? That's almost anyone's guess, but three in three is more than cause for concern.

Whatever the outcome, I just hope it's in Luke's, and only Luke's, best interest. That said, I'd love to see him return to form back on the field for another six or seven years, or more. ASAP afterwards, I'll be getting on up there, but I really hope I live to see the guy become at least a coordinator, better yet, head coach. Cerebrally, in terms of football smarts, he's way up in stratospheric Belichick territory, and it would be great to see something that happen. Great for him, the league, and fans. If you paid any attention to him on the sidelines last year, tell me you don't see it coming.

So...if he misses bears could he be back for Tampa?

In theory, he could be back next game. The public has no details other than what we saw, what RR said about him being in the protocol, and the protocol itself. Comments that he's okay, fine, etc., don't really mean much. Unless they somehow conclude a Dx of a concussion was flat wrong initially, and I didn't see a provision for that, once in the protocol, you've got to go through the steps and meet certain criteria. Time-wise, other than no same day return, there's no specified limit in either direction. It could be a couple of days, or months and months (e.g., Oher case).

Obviously we all want him to have a long career and join his brothers in Canton. But I can't in good conscience wish for that over his health and life.

With Dan Morgan I think a lot of us got angry because we were losing and we needed him. After what happened with Junior Seau I would never blame another player for taking care of themselves.
