Mike Palardy Compares Himself To Drew Brees As Both Backup QBs Were Out Today

For a team who regularly keeps three to four quarterbacks on the roster, it's rare to hear the Panthers having a "quarterback crisis."

However, that's exactly what the Panthers faced during their first practice after their bye.

Panthers QB Derek Anderson and Garrett Gilbert each found themselves exempt from practice, with the injury designation of "an illness." Essentially, that left Cam Newton as the only active quarterback at practice for the first time in a while.

So, when the Panthers began their emergency search for a scout team quarterback, Michael Palardy was all too happy to boast and offer his "Brees-like skills."

Quote

Punter Michael Palardy, who as a freshman and sophomore at Florida powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High played kicker and quarterback: “I have a little Drew Brees in me. I've got the size, I've got the frame for it. Why not, right?” (Palardy is 5-foot-11, 200 pounds; Brees is 6-0, 209).

Long snapper J.J. Jansen: “He was ready to renegotiate at the quarterback franchise tag level. He had some Gatorade commercials already lined up.”

For more, and how Ken Dorsey got involved himself, check out this humorous oral write-up of what transpired this Monday.

If he’s available (fat chance I know) I’m taking Josh Allen with our 2nd round pick. Physical specimen who needs fine tuning but would be an unreal backup/guy to groom/future trade asset/fill-in if Cam needs to sit a game or two/practice QB with rocket arm and athleticism/etc.

Where do you propose getting a MUCH needed backup QB?  Giving big money to a bum like DA again=bad.  Investing a late pick on a bum like Kaaya=bad.  Solution?

in the FIRST ROUND WHOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHHHOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOHHHHHHHOOOOO

they'll never see it coming pinky

I said 2nd.  Obviously no way in the 1st.  Consensus on Allen differs VASTLY-from #1 overall to day 3.  HIGHLY unlikely he makes it to the late 2nd but I pounce if he is with two 3rds now in the fold.  A Jimmy G/Patriots type acquisition.

Backup QB is a huge need.

I'm not so sure a first round QB is off the table next year.

At some point you have to start grooming a replacement, and the Packers did it the right way with Aaron Rodgers.

Mind you, I'm not necessarily advocating this notion, but I do see it as a legitimate possibility.

I love your optimism. Thinking this team could get by with using a 2nd round pick on a developmental, back up, QB. I mean, most folks would never dream of not using that pick on say a WR, or DE. Or maybe a S, or CB.

Not you. You believe this team is good enough to get away with it. Man, that is optimism.

We may or may not get away with it-but the league takes kill shots at our QB and we’ve already learned that big money to an aging name is fool’s gold.  At present our punter is playing QB.  Food for thought at this point.

I am sorry, but, I don't see it. We do not need a replacement for Cam. We need a back up. We are a long way from needing to groom that guy. All we need is a guy who could be DECENT in practice, and MAYBE play well enough to keep us in it, for a game or two.

I mean, when will this Cam is fragile narrative end? Cam has been Cam for almost 7 years. And he has missed what? 4 games?

We have Gilbert, who has flashed, and knows the system. We have Kayaa, whom for some odd reason, the FO seems to like. Two up and comers who can fight it out.

We don't need to use resources on a back up at this time.

Not in the 1st.  Cam has another decade of good football.  But a huge difference between late 1st and late 2nd.

    • agree to disagree you are entitled to that opinion even though I find the argument completely bizarre based on data. I could type out a long paragraph discussing those areas but what’s the point. I posted a screenshot that showed Bryce in a similar post snap situation with a free rusher in his face which resulted in a TD - that’s what happened on the play so I posted it.
    • I've already addressed this notion in a previous reply. You are basing your assertion outside reality if you think Bryce would have not only been more successful but defeated the Patriots in place of Herbert. Bryce got blown off the field by that Patriots team with the highest paid OL in the league. We've seen Bryce with an OL that gave up 65 sacks and it resulted in the #1 pick. And that is not a defense of Herbert or arguing he is a great QB in any way. He has physical talent but he has been similar to Darnold early in his career in terms of his very up and down perfomances. However that does not change the fact that they have significantly less invested in the OL than the Panthers.
    • I think Tepper has been setting the stage where pending there is no miracle he wipes it all clean.  Think you already have been told that with small things like Evero staying.  Bryce is the guy next year.  OC, DC, everything stays the same.  QB room largely the same.  Nothing would really matter there.  They basically get one more shot and it goes how the schedule paired with our 27th ranked O predictably most likely goes.  Everyone out the door together.  Bryce is a bridge tier QB.  I don’t see Dave surviving where he could be bridge QB here in reality.
