The guy who caught Cam (#26) was Trae Waynes. He ran a ludicrous 4.31 40 and was the 11th overall pick. The guy who couldn't catch Cam (#29) ran a very nice 4.43 40 and was the 25th overall pick.

Cam probably runs a 4.5 after gaining steam. The most iconic is Auburn run vs LSU when he accelerates aways from Patrick Peterson.

Cam was naturally faster in his last college season and first 2 or 3 NFL seasons than he is now. Its just age and hes a big ass dude. If youre not usain bolt youre usually not out-sprinting much smaller younger faster dudes than you

He's still fast as hell. He wasn't gonna get caught by a 4.43 guy and a 4.31 guy just barely reeled him in in time.

he wouldve dusted both of them or at least carried the fast guy into the endzone in his rookie season . Remember that Falcons run from his rookie season? The Bucs run?

Say what you want about Cam Newton, but when I'm older and we're at the point that it's been 10 years since Cam last played a game, I will always be appreciative that I was able to witness the entire career of the best runner at the QB position.  Guys like Cunningham and Vick were faster and more elusive, but Newton's ability to run inside and outside on designed runs while being arguably the best short-yardage runner since he's arrived makes him a different breed.

He would've never outran Trae Waynes.

Yeah, Waynes has amazing speed.  I loved him coming out of college, he's been underwhelming it seems as a pro though.

Newton has lost a step since his early days.  Someone posted the LSU video earlier.  Newton doesn't have that kind of burst anymore - ankle injuries played a role (I didn't really notice a difference until 2014). Still possesses really good change of direction ability.

Athletic Peak Cam was an absolute marvel from an athletic standpoint.

Straight line speed, I think he's as fast as ever. I don't think he's quite as quick as he used to be in terms of acceleration, but when he gets going he can still flat out run.

Yea, he still has the straight line speed.  Most guys tend to not lose that without a major leg injury playing a role, even as they get older (Ginn still out-running guys at 32 years old).  It's just the burst that is lacking compared to his younger days.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
