We were successful running the damned ball. Our receiving corps is not the best and we were playing against a pretty good defensive backfield,  but apparently  some of y'all believe that we should have thrown more (when we weren't particularly successful at it)?  We used the pass to keep them honest,  which it did (and the moment that they fell asleep, Funchess made them pay), and we never abandoned the run which was largely responsible for our victory. That was the game plan all day long.  On defense, sure,  we went back to cover two for a series and paid because players took some bad angles,  but closed it out by rushing Keenum repeatedly.  Solid if not fundamental play calling that's seemingly boring, but it worked.

running was a big part of the play calling.  That's really the preferred way to move the ball.

For Rivera and Shula?  Correct.  That is their preferred way to move the ball.

If you look at the how the NFL has actually set up their rules?  Incorrect.  The NFL has done everything in its power for over 20 years now to advantage and encourage the passing game (and, thus, DIS-advantage the defense vs. the passing game) in order to encourage higher scoring for more "interesting" games.

The NFL: "Here!  Take these rules!  Throw the ball!  Have fun!  Score!"

Ron Rivera and Mike Shula: "Fug your rules, we finna run da bawlz."

(P.S. The only reason THE ONLY REASON that Rivera and Shula have a "successful" run game over the years is because of Cam Newton.)

Coaching staff did hell of a job besides few conservative calls

Give credit where credit is due. I obviously will disagree with some of their calls, but other that that next to last defensive series, they called a really good game on both sides of the ball.

Cam breaking that safety's ankles had nothing to do with blocking.

As a matter of fact, that play should have been called back if any ref had been watching Kalil with a handful of a LB's jersey, pulling it as the LB was trying to get away.

So, yeah, I'm just gonna let Cam have this one for a good option read followed by an excellent open field move followed by a 62 yard run if you don't mind.

Fixed

That's  all fine and good, but I know that you're not trying to suggest to me that any coach on any level of football wouldn't run it 100 percent of the game if they could do it with the desired result. Any and every coach will run it down another team's throat with impunity if they could get away with it. That should go without saying. So, YES, running is the preferred way to move the ball! That is a football truth notwithstanding the NFL league office naturally trying to protect players and making rules that make sense from a common sense and stylistic standpoint, which ostensibly facilitate passing. Don't get it twisted!

And,  you'll get no argument from me about Cam.  We have needed better run blocking and new blood and talent in the running game for awhile now.

Be careful.  Cam is not a standout passer.   The Panthers built an offense around Cam's strength (running).  If the Panthers were not determined to run the ball, Cam would be an extremely average QB.

    • Nope, that’s not the disconnect. In 2022, our GM knew he was going QB in the 2023 draft. You are talking about risking fans involvement on a team that’s been basically bottom 3 in the NFL from 2018 to now. There is no risk when you are that bad. We were right to want Fitterer to tank in 2022 and get rid of anyone who could bring us big value and extra cap room for future years when we aren’t winning 2-7 wins a year. We knew we wanted a rookie QB so we didn’t trade assets for picks and get a better draft slot so we ended up only getting a 2nd for Burns and threw in DJ Moore plus an early 2nd instead of a 1st, which basically lost us an early 2nd. The “risk” to our franchise’s losing culture ended up being around 4 1sts of total value. Yep, I refuse to listen to the other perspective that lost us around 4 1sts of value. At least our fan involvement is so high that our stadium isn’t chock full of visiting fans since we’ve won so much since 2022. Again, you won’t change my mind that we should have tanked in 2022 and had another 2-4 Browns/Horns on this team.
