If Wilks is gone...

There are a couple of defensive head coaches who might be looking for work as a defensive coordinator next year.

Chuck Pagano is quite possibly out in Indianapolis. Pagano has never worked directly with Ron Rivera, but his brother John did back in San Diego. That connection could get his foot in the door. And for whatever his failings as a head coach, Pagano was a good DC back in Baltimore where they also ran an aggressive system.

Another potential option with no connection to Rivera, but a connection to the Panthers, Jack Del Rio. The Raiders are said to be iffy on whether Del Rio keeps his job next year or not. It'd be interesting to see him back on the Panthers sidelines. And likewise, Del Rio is a very good defensive mind.

General expectation, knowing Rivera, is that internal candidates will get the first look. On that front, defensive line coach Eric Washington or linebacker coach Al Holcomb could get interviewed. Of course, there's also the possibility that Wilks tries to take one or the other of them with him to his new gig. The Panthers might be willing to part with one, but likely not both.

One other thing of note: If Wilks does get a head coaching job next year, you can actually start to talk about Rivera having a "coaching tree", albeit a small one.

I haven’t looked at Indy’s defense but where are they in terms of points allowed, turnovers etc?  I could be wrong but I never see them high on defensive rankings.

The raiders were pretty decent in their darling season last year.

and I forget, did Jack coach our Super Bowl defense in 2003?

i believe Jack would be my choice.

headcoach isn’t the defensive coordinator but they usually do stick their fingers in it.

I don't think the Raiders were decent at all last year in terms of defense from what I remember, I could be wrong. But yeah, Jack was the Panthers D coordinator in 2003.

Mike Trgovac was the DC the Super Bowl year.

Del Rio got the Jags job after one year in Charlotte.

I think, based on the overall performance,  Wilks is not a hot HC candidate.  D started slow. Took him a few games to get a feel for the calls. Might be another year.

The NFL makes a list of recommended  head coaching candidates every year.

Wilks is on it.

Well we see if the defense puts out and our offensive line clicks to allow Cam to run around to make plays our team kills people.

so defensive coordinator is supremely important for any chance of being a perennial winner.

Shulas way works if it’s what I said— Cam makes it work. Shula does need to be replaced but we make do.

Pagano has a pretty good record as a DC. That's how he got the Colts job. Honestly, both the Pagano brothers are pretty good.

The Colts defense has likely suffered a lot because Grigson was incompetent. Heck, the guy spent a first-rounder on Bjorn Werner for crying out loud.

I just rehashed his coaching record and I’m not sure the Colts should fire him. When Andrew Luck was healthy they were kicking ass. Once Andrew went down the drain so did they.

this year they’ve had quarterback by committee.

they should bring in a decent quarterback like Minni did.

anyway, sure he seems like a good DC, maybe we should.

I'm not a big fan of him as a head coach, but again you can't separate him from Grigson.

The Colts changed GM's not long ago, so it's quite possible Chris Ballard might want his own guy, maybe somebody from Andy Reid's staff (he might wonder what Matt Nagy could do with Andrew Luck as well).
