Yeah bc it wasn't those 4 field goals (one missed) that lost us the game. One play we had both Funchess and Olsen on the sidline. Shula sucks and only get saved by Cams incredible play. Without him Shula would be on the street

As would Ron "Career Defensive Coordinator" Rivera.

Hell, the fugging CHICAGO BEARS had the opportunity to hire Ron Rivera as HC and they passed.  DA BEARS.

Let's be real: Ron Rivera was never going to hire Hue Jackson. Their respective personalities make oil and water look compatible (I can only imagine how that interview went). And even if he had, how long was that gonna last?  At the time, Jackson was still looking (hard) at being a head coach again.  He got his wish, and well...yeesh.

But what about Shurmur?

Well, part of the reason Shurmur got a look in the first place was that he and Rivera were former colleagues.  They were on the Eagles staff together for five years (1999-2003).  And again, Shurmur had already proven himself successful enough as an OC (with the Rams) to get a head coaching job.  That job being in Cleveland, it was by nature temporary, but after his work in Minnesota he's getting looked at again.

What could have been...

Interesting.  I didn't know that part.

Sounds to me like ol' Ron was making sure they were no Brutus's on Caesar's staff.

That dude that went 7-9 three years in a row?

2014 Saints defense: 31st in yard surrendered, 28th in points surrendered

2014 Saints offense: 9th in points per game

2015 Saints defense: last in yards, last in points

2015 Saints offense: 8th in ppg

2016 Saints defense: 31st in yards, 31st in points

2016 Saints offense: 2nd in ppg

The Saints weren't losing in 2014-16 because of Sean Payton's offense.

I remember you not wanting Shurmur

Look, I understand criticizing Shula last year but how the hell are you making him the scape goat right now?  He drew up a damn good game plan imo.  He was able to put up 400+ yards in the Dome with Cam, CMC, Stewart and an island of misfit toys. We should have scored more than 26 points, Cam missed a wide open CMC for 6 early and Funchess couldn't locate what could have been the winning TD.  Gano also left off 3 more. I think Shula was actually pretty solid all year considering the injuries he was dealt with.

If there's a coordinator that we should be criticizing right now, it's Wilks.  Stop bringing up Shula.  He was prepared to win today, Wilks wasn't.

You mean like not handing off to the running back for a run between the tackles 100% of the time on 2nd and 10?

Or maybe a no huddle/Hurry up offense?

That thing Cam is super good at?

A quick route that doesn’t start 5 yards behind the los?

A toss sweep to the fast RB we just drafted?

A TE screen to Olsen?

Bootlegs?

Slants?

And yet our best actual offensive performance came in 2015.

By using Cam Newton as a battering ram and shear talent to overcome huge weaknesses in our offense. We paid for that in the Super Bowl and in 2016 though.

The number one player that effects the game on our team isn't Luke, KK, Star, or Davis it's Cam. He needs a supporting cast.

I don’t care if he’s good sometimes, it just needs to change.

Our problem is the team always gives him an out. Is the game plan the problem or are our RBs and O-line? I’ve never seen a team get nowhere running the ball like we do. We get stonewalled all game long. If stew were good I just think his talent would win out at least part of time. Same with our o-line.

Then we lose all our speed guys until we’re left with clay. Samuel or Byrd would have caught that TD. I mean what the hell do er expect from a passing attack that loses 2 of its top 3 guys to injury and loses another top guy for a trade? I mean there’s no coming back from that. Then we have Cam’s whole shoulder issue and the ongoing poor accuracy flaring up. Then we have no Greg for most of the year.

this team was a good team.

The fact we overcame just the personnel issues on the field is enough. Ignore the rest of the bullshit. It’s crazy we went 11-5 in a loaded NFC.

the issue for me is I’m sick of Shula. I just want him gone and I don’t wanna have some dumb back and forth about good games and bad games. He’s stale and Cam should be given better talent and a more interesting scheme.
