The real problem with going after anyone from outside the organization is the looming change in ownership.  Most quality DC candidates wouldn't want to come into a situation that will have loads of distractions and a strong possibility that it could also be a one and done situation.  They would likely want a little more stability.

The only guys that would be interested are guys that are either on the street and would to take anything offered, or guys who have already proven to be mediocre DC's, at best, and are just happy to get another chance.

This defense is not far from being a stellar group.  Any incoming DC would love to have the opportunity to work with Luke, TD and Peppers (providing they stay one more year)

The defense is already great, it's the way they're used. It's amazing that people that are up in arms about Shula not knowing how to use the talent are the same ones who think Wilks is great.

I will admit I was one of them but seems he had no way of disguising our defense and pretty much said... Here we come...sadly they said OK and gashed the crap out of us.

McDermott was good at disguising our defense making it hard to pick us apart.  McDermott>Wilks

Valid, though Rivera getting a two year extension may make a difference.

Yeah, but if I'm a hot DC with options, I don't think I want to take the risk of a new owner coming in and bringing in his own guys after just one season.

I guess if I felt that there is enough talent here that I can still make my mark, it might be ok.  But for a coordinator that doesn't know the players and installing a completely new scheme, the likelihood is that the first year will be a transition year and not show what it can be.  The second year is where you would likely expect to see the payoff.  But if he's not given that second year, then it could hurt his future opportunities.  Just look at Shanahan in Atlanta.  After the first year, the offense looked like hot garbage, but in year two, things came together and that offense hummed.

Regardless, I don't see an outsider as being the next DC.  It will almost certainly be either Eric Washington or Al Holcomb.

If I’m a hot coordinator candidate I’m begging for a shot with the Panthers. Three coordinators under Rivera have gone into be NFL head coaches plus former QB coach Mike McCoy. Rivera is essentially averaging a new head coach coming off of his staff every other year.
