Reshaping Newton

I've gone back and looked at some of the Rivera's comments from his presser as well as from an interview on site with Mike Craft.

The more I think about it, I'm increasingly convinced that the Panthers are going to make a major effort to try and turn Cam Newton into a more traditional quarterback.

Rivera isn't necessarily unhappy with Newton right now, but the fact that he fired the two people who are most responsible for coaching Newton indicates that he believes things are currently something less than ideal.

That doesn't mean they'll stop him from running, but it could very well become far less central to our offensive attack.

And yeah, the hiring of someone like Norv Turner would lend to us going in that direction.

I honestly think Cam has carried so much of the load in the running game out of sheer necessity. He was by far our most effective runner this year and that's honestly been the case more often than not throughout his career.

I would love to see us be able to establish a more effective traditional running game to take some of that load off of him. I think he'll always be our primary short yardage runner. He's just too good at that to go away from it.

It has to happen at some point. Newton isn't getting younger and he's proven he can make HOF passes. I wish he could get help with pocket movement and being more consistent.

This is absolutely necessary. We need to do whatever it takes ro get better passing the ball. And yeah, thats starts with your Qb.

Cam’s mechanics have got to get better. Footwork and field vision needs improving.

This team has got to stop relying on his run game so much.

He needs a LT.

He needs WRs to fit more dink and dunking. He’s accuracy is not consistent, and as a gunslinger I don’t think it ever will be, he needs receivers who can get separation with good hands. Quit the long yardage bullshit.

The scary thing is, ALL of this has been evident since he started but at the very least since the Panthers were exposed in the SB.

Yep, if we want him playing into his mid-late 30s like many elite QBs, we have to start dialing back the number of hits he takes.

It was interesting that he said he wants an Oc who knows how to get his playmaker back into space. He referred to the 56 yard pass and run by cmc as an example of getting his fast back vs a linebacker. He wNts to see more of those type of plays

His mechanics are awful. He consistently overcomes them with his freakish athleticism. How many guys can throw a 30 yard dart, across their body, falling away, on the run?! If someone like Norv, who has a proven track record at developing QBs came in here, I'd be fine with his perceived lack of creativity. I'm not one that has a big problem with ball control offense. Controlling the ball is one of the main tenets of the sport, but you have to score once you grind your way into the red zone, and FGs don't cut it. 

No one's been thinking about this, but MAYBE Norv is being brought in as the QB coach, and there's someone else in mind for the OC role. You never know...

We just need to have the Cam Newton that played Sunday to show up every Sunday.   Don't need anything major.  Just single minded focus on his fundamentals and progressions.  No up and downs.  No coming out throwing high.  No good Cam/ Bad Cam.  Also talent so that he doesn't have to do everything.

Dorsey was the worst QB coach in the league. He felt more like a teammate to Cam than a coach and Cam did not develop as a pocket passer whatsoever due to Ken's coaching. Getting rid of Shula is big but Dorsey was even worse. He shouldn't even be a graduate assistant for some DIII school. Hope we can get someone in here now to mold Cam and polish him off a bit before it's too late. Cam can easily be every bit as good as Brees, Rodgers, P. Manning as a passer with coaching. Overall QB he's up there but if he can get to their levels as a passer PLUS his threat on the ground... We'd have the NFL's Jordan. It's a shame it took this long with Dorsey and Shula but better late than never.
