Well, Gantt is saying someone's screwed

At this point, if you don't want to blackball Hurney because of this complaint, then name him to another title and give somebody else the GM job.

That seems like a reasonable solution to me. It also allows Hurney, who himself has previously worked with Jimmy Raye as well by the way, to help the new GM transition into his job.

The one obvious problem with that would be it might look bad to have Hurney actively employed while he's the subject of an NFL investigation, but honestly there are no easy solutions available right now.

As if none of these candidates have worked in scouting and are currently involved with the draft process. I’m sure they’ve done their due diligence on current prospects. Get with Ron and the staff and let him have input. Stop with the BS excuses.

And to think,  back in the day, people were trying to tell me that you couldn't be a fan and cover the team objectively, and that was why Gantt was the best. Well, what if you down-low hate the team...?

Just kidding (maybe).  I still say that fans of the team can make excellent writers on the team, if not the best writers on the team.

Raye worked with the Chargers as a scout, Director of College Scouting and then Director of Player Personnel from 1996 through 2012.

Norv Turner was with the Chargers twice during that period. He was their offensive coordinator for one year (2001) and then took the head coaching reins from 2007 to 2012.

Ron Rivera was there as Turner's linebacker coach and later defensive coordinator from 2007 through the 2010 season. He took the Panthers job in 2011.

So six years of working with Turner and four with Rivera...

I'd call that "meaningful background", but that's just me.

You just proved that Darin Gantt is full of sh*t and shouldn't be given a minute of anyone's time. He's the asshole version of David Newton

I actually think that this is a pretty reasonable idea. See what happens when you take the shades off and put the shades down?

They're all currently employed with other teams in positions that would actively involve them in the scouting process. Heck, Raye is an Assistant GM and Dawson is a Director of College Scouting.

They'd have to adjust to the Panthers personnel, but it's not like they'd be looking at a different talent pool.

I think he’s giving short shrift to those ther candidates. They aren’t gonna be so lost in an NFL front office that they can’t do anything other than look for the executive bathroom— which is a punchy bs line.

all of these candidates would have their own notes on this year’s draft. All you have to do is take the organization’s internal info and add your own. If you’ve interviewed for the team, you’ve probably looked at tape on the team to come up with personnel moves and needs on the roster. Otherwise what the hell is the interview about? A new GM won’t be a disaster. Acting like Hurney is currently holding the entire draft plans and repository of player info in his head is idiotic. Plus, in a new GM situation, no doubt will Hurney, who is still the interim GM, will be required to give info and assist the new GM being acclimated.

What will be a disaster is if we don’t make a decisive move in the very near future. We need to set Hurney aside to deal with his issue and we either need to request interviews with more candidates or pick one of the people already in the running.

"If they keep him now, there’s a better chance for stability on the football side for the coming season, which increases the chances for stability elsewhere in the organization..."

So, let's keep the same guy in charge that has repeatedly failed to secure a Lombardi for over a decade, simply for the sake of "stability" and familiarity?

This has to be one of the lamest endorsements of a GM ever.

It's the Panthers' way. How else do we explain Mike Shula hanging around for so long?

Given his current situation, it's kinda hard to argue that Marty Hurney equals "stability".

And yes, the Shula comparison is a valid one. That decision was also made for the sake of continuity.
