Interesting article from NFL.com

Kind of makes sense.  Tag Norwell and work on a long term deal.  Ryan is retring after next year and we'll be able to cut ties with Matt if he doesn't improve.

If we lose Norwelll this time next year we could be looking at only 2 starters on the line.   Williams and Turner.

But paying a G LT money is hard--especially when your center has missed 14 games in 2 seasons and your LT sucks...

We would have nearly $50m invested in the left side of the line and C.

Cut Ryan.  Plan on cutting Matt in 2019.  Sign Norwell now--he wants to be here.

HOWEVER...If Moton cannot play LT, you may not have a spot for him...If he can play LG at a high level, it could be worth it to let Norwell walk.  I  would still cut Ryan-$10m to play six games?  Not worth it.

I would rather him restructure (don't know how you restructure for one year).  Maybe an incentive type deal.

Ryan is a critical part of our line.  Unless you plan on drafting one of the top centers in the draft.  Which is a good option for round 2 or 3.  One of those good centers should be there.

I think the key is Moton.  Is he going to move outside and take over for R. Kalil if so you tag Norwell. If he is staying inside.  Let Norwell walk (chokes on tongue)

I can't think of a player that has reached free agency that I wanted to keep like I do Norwell.  Outside Peppers.

Having an all pro next to your poo tier left tackle helps tremendously.

Just imagine Matt without Norwell next to him next season, Yikes.

Tagging Andrew is a no-brainer.

I’m pretty sure we’ve seen the best that M Kalil has to offer... no “if’s” needed. Would be great if Moton could take over at LT, wouldn’t be asking too much to think he would be an upgrade over what we have now.

Well keeping Norwell would help him tremendously.

As I stated before if we were stuck with Kalil one more season Norwell would help and give us time to get a longer term deal done.  Keeping the best Guard tandem in the NFL.  It would also give Moton one more year to develop as a LT.

Draft a center 3rd round and give him time to learn under Ryan.   Smooth transition in 2019.

You can't let Norwell walk and the tag for a guard is cheaper than most.

Also can you imagine what the tag is going to be like at QB with what SF did.

Nope Oline franchise tags aren't position specific like the dline is. Tagging Norwell is 14 million

Right now Trai turner is the second highest paid right guard in the NFL at 11.2 million and right guards ttraditionally make more then left guards by about 2 million.

I have no problem locking him up for a year. With all the chaos who ever becomes GM needs to work out a contract with him because he's one of the best guards in the league and helps out Kalil and who ever plays C when Ryan goes down.

So you want to give Norwell 14M AND Ryan Kalil 10M for just this year? Too many other holes to fill. Only way Signing Norwell works is to keep his first year cap hit around 7M(like Trai). Also, about what we save cutting Kalil. Your scenario would leave with many rookies and get minimum players filling out the roster.

Based on what I am reading the offers from other teams for Norwell will start at 12.5 million per year and someone will probably throw a 13.75  per at him. If we have to match that to keep him 5 years (the last two he may be on the decline) or pay him 14.3 mil for one year under the tag I'll take the tag. Of course that means this time next year we may be without both Kalil's, Norwell and Williams (free agent). That would be a rough situation for Cam to start 2019 with four new starters on the OL.

Kalil is a bandaid. He sucked early in the year but he was average in the latter part of the year. No other option on the market is average right now at LT.

    • They won my vote of confidence for this year
    • I really like the way this team is trending. Morgan and Canales rookie campaign saw them do some questionable picks but, they also did some really good things. Especially addressing the offensive line.  Young had such a disastrous rookie season where his confidence was nowhere to be seen.  You can attribute part of this to a terrible offensive line.  So, we focused on the O-line.   We then brought in several defensive free agents that were supposed to compliment Brown.  Once Brown went down those players could not hold the line.  2025 we focused on defense in Free Agency and brought in several good players.  We then added more talent in the draft.  I think we have competition in several areas where Vets are not guaranteed to be starters.  Our offensive line is pretty set with some good backups.  Our defensive line is going to be a war for who comes out to be the starters.  All in All, we are leaps and bounds much better than 2023 roster.  Canales made some rookie head coach mistakes but grew as the season progressed.  He got our QB, who was starting to look like a huge bust, playing with confidence and poise.  Now it appears Young is moving upwards.  Maybe he is a QB whisperer.  After Young started to play better our offense was fun to watch.  Morgan knows football and knows what he wants in his players.  It appears to me that not only are these players he's drafted really good and got great value for them, but they are also high motor, intense players. Our defense, in the past, was always the key to our success.  I think Morgan is building a great defense. I know it is too soon to tell but I believe we may have a tandem that will be around a long time.  It would be nice to see Morgan/Canales be in the same class as Lynch/Shanahan and Beane/McDermott.   I know many Huddlers will overreact, but I truly believe we have a tandem that will be around a long time. TIME WILL TELL. Go Panthers
