Simple Solution: hire Lake Dawson as Assistant GM

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

We already know from inside reports that the scouting staff is constantly having to talk Marty Hurney out of doing something stupid. Why not take the pressure off of them and put that job in the hands of one man?

If the Panthers were to make Lake Dawson the assistant GM, then they would gain the benefit of all his knowledge and experience while still allowing Jerry Richardson to hang on to his Golden Calf. The team hasn't had an Assistant GM since Brandon Beane left for the Bills so there's no one to replace, and it's a position we've had open before.

Is it the job he interviewed for? No, but it's still a step up from his current position. It also puts him in place to easily take the permanent job if the next owner does as most suspect he will and fires Hurney. Dawson would have a head start and the team wouldn't have to bother with interviewing other candidates.

Would Hurney feel threatened? Maybe, but honestly who gives a rat's ass? He's lousy at his job so he probably should feel threatened.

Outside of the fact that it might make Marty Hurney feel nervous or inferior, does anyone have a good argument why this shouldn't happen?

Another voice of reasoning to counsel with shouldn’t be a bad idea.

Would he accept an assistant GM position in a situation like this?  He wouldn't be my first choice, but he seems like he has a good head on his shoulders and has had multiple interviews for a GM spot.  Why sign up as an assistant, to a guy who shouldn't be there in the first place, when a new owner will likely want to clean house, at least in the front office (maybe on the coaching staff as well).

If he was offered the GM position, he would at least have a few months, possibly an entire offseason to showcase what he could do.  If he's offered the Assistant GM position, he'd likely be fired if the new owner didn't want to retain Marty, and judging by the amount of interest anyone not named Jerry Richardson has ever had in Hurney as a GM, I'd think its pretty likely he's gone.

It'd be the highest job title he's held so far.

And I would expect that if the new owner fired Hurney (something pretty much everybody expects) he'd be wise to at least consider looking in-house. Most teams do check out at least one in-house candidate when they fire a major position like GM or head coach.

Certainly not guaranteed, but at least likely.

I had thought this might be a good idea previously, but I would doubt that Dawson would make such a move with future ownership up in the air.   I don't think I would even if it was a fairly substantial raise. Too many moving parts at this point.

Besides as the op likes to point out there is no guarantee what future ownership will do - they may just clean house from top to bottom even with a successful season under Hurney/Dawson/Rivera.

He might not, but it is still a promotion from where he is now.

I'd actually be good with Jimmy Raye in this role as well. The Panthers didn't give him a second interview, but he does have a previous work history with Rivera (and with Hurney, although not as extensive).

You might be able to talk me into Martin Mayhew, but I certainly wouldn't have the enthusiasm for him that I would have for Dawson or Raye.
