The Hope for Marty Hurney

"Marty Hurney, the Carolina Panther’s once-and-again general manager, represents a lot of different things to a lot of different Panthers fans. He is a spectre of seasons past bringing nightmares of cap troubles and poor drafts. He is a guarantee for drafting 10 year All-Pro’s in the first round each and every year - that is, each and every year he has a first round pick. He is the height of a conservative franchise refusing to part stick from mud. The truth of Hurney’s hiring is that he is and was all of those things. He can also be much more. Hurney has had plenty of mistakes to learn from and plenty of time to reflect on them"

Mr Scot won't like this:
"I am not going to wring my hands and worry about his hiring being a signal of Jerry Richardson’s continued stewardship of a franchise he has publicly stepped away from. We’ll have plenty of time to worry about that after Richardson fails to find a suitable candidate to buy the Panthers, if that is, indeed, his intention. That is, for now, a worst case conspiracy theory that is just banana pants crazy. For Hurney, that means we, as fans, don’t need to worry about his simply being a ‘yes man’ for an owner that wants some insulation from the press and public. "

"So far, we have had very few actual actions as the Panthers general manager to by which to judge his return. Yesterday’s roster moves, headlined by the releases of Charles Johnson and Kurt Coleman, are among the first real moves Hurney has made in 2018. Most of his exposure to the public has been through interviews in which he has repeatedly mentioned the lessons he learned from his failures in the past."

I'd recommend reading the full article. New Hurney  has looked decent so far. Quotes like the one below are ones I love to see:

“I look back at some of the mistakes, it might have been that loyalty, the emotional part of my brain – and that’s when I’ve got in trouble in my life. I have a big mouth sometimes,” he said. “When the emotional part of my brain takes over, that’s not good a lot of times.”

Since he is here to stay i might as well be optimistic.

Perhaps hurney got into trouble with the Cap because of pressure from richardson to retain fan favorites even at over the top high costs. Hurney, being a yes man, did that. Gettleman resisted and ultimatly got booted.

Im hoping Hurneys biggest flaw was a result of a meddling overbearing and demanding owner trying to run the show while off stage.

My hope is hurney truely learned from past mistakes and how negatively impactful they were and that he is more cold blooded.

Now go get us a stud in the 1st hurndog

    • I am not sure it should be a ‘sell out to go to the SB’ season. And hope they don’t.  At the same time I was thinking you absolutely must find out if you want to pay for Bryce or not. That means putting it on him. No protecting and trying to hide weaknesses with the run game and a super conservative calls.  So I wish they would do it and find out, win or lose, 2026. No more developing. Time to do it. Let’s see once and for all.
    • My biggest fear with Bryce Young is that he will always do just enough to stick around. He shows flashes and then drops a turd so the hopium is always there. Like his career highlight reel if you cut it up to some hype music and did a YouTube video would actually be quite good. His great plays really, really look good. But after that video you look at his yearly averages for completion percentage, yardage, touchdowns, and virtually every other metric and it is meh as fug. Like you know Bryce is gonna be 13/23 for 157 yards a touchdown and probably a pick.  I will 100% give him his flowers for his athleticism and ability to scramble outside the pocket. I haven’t seen the mythical “super processing ability” he was touted for per se, but he has shown flashes of absolutely elite awareness when it comes to scrambling. The little basketball move he does to shake defensive linemen has almost become a signature move. It’s hard to explain but you know it when you see it he stops on a dime and pivots like he is gonna hit a step back jumper and it has gotten him out of a lot of trouble.  I sincerely, truly, as a vocal Bryce HATER, hope that since we are obviously running with him next year the coaching staff actually tailors plays around his strengths. He needs to be in a pure spread IMO. His size is much less of a hindrance when he can play QB in open space. I feel like most of his highlight reel is from scrambles and play action/bootlegs.
