5 mil to Torrey Smith is no big deal. It's not.

It is when it leaves you 19 mil to spend (5  of it will go to rookies) and still have holes at

WR (Smith is a deep slot #3), LG (Center Kalil missing 50% of games last 2 seasons and retiring after this season), FS, CB, NT, DE, RB, and a backup QB

So with that 23 million to spend originally in your post (add back the 5, subtract one for Worley)...please tell me how we would fill all of our holes, or even most...?

WR - You clearly want a better one, that will run 10 million minimum if you're in the ARob/Watkins crowd.  Probably even 7-8 for Richardson or Moncrief.

The rookies you allude to need to get paid - 5 million

So, already, there is 8 million left for LG, CB, NT, RB, DE, and a backup QB.

Let's say we get lucky and get a decent backup QB for 2-3 million, and Peppers back for 4 million.

Whoops - -We have 1 million left for LG, CB, NT, RB.

I can get down with Worley defenders arguing we gave up on him too soon, but to argue the money aspect of Torrey Smith's NON-GUARANTEED contract, while wanting a better (read, more expensive) WR...it literally makes no sense. A better WR on the FA market would likely cost half of our cap space - - - - minimum.

Smith is just as good or better than a lot of guys on this list...I'm not sure the arguement you are trying to make but this list ain't it

That...is his argument...?  Smith is a value option, and better than a lot of the guys making the same amount of money.

he did that poo twice and people here still want to think Gettleman is the best gm of all-time

Well, to be honest, the first time it happened Arizona offered him more money than we could pay due to the crushing cap situation we were in at the time.  While I hated to see him leave, I understood the reason.

But I agree that the last time was not a wise decision on Getts part.

Russell Shepard is hitting the cap at $3.5M this season. Just saying.

That's one of the worst free agency moves in franchise history when you consider the ramifications of basically wasting a year pissing in the wind with our aging core.

It was subtraction by subtraction.

Barnwell thinks we could have had him for less...

Trade: Eagles deal WR Torrey Smith to Panthers for CB Daryl Worley

Grade for Eagles: A-
Grade for Panthers: C

It's difficult to believe that the Panthers sent an actual asset to the Eagles for Smith, given that Philadelphia was virtually guaranteed to decline the former Ravens star's $5 million option for 2018. Smith's impact was underrated by his final numbers (36 catches for 420 yards and two touchdowns) -- he got open downfield far more frequently than it seemed, but was let down by some subpar deep throws by Carson Wentz and Nick Foles. Smith also chipped in with a few drops, which didn't help matters.

The Panthers needed wideout help alongside Devin Funchess, but it's hard to figure that they were really bidding against other teams who wanted to assume Smith's contact for 2018 and trade an asset in the process. Smith probably would have struggled to get the two years and $10 million left on his deal as a free agent.

In lieu of possibly netting a compensatory pick for Smith, the Eagles instead take home another cheap cornerback in Worley, who started 25 games over his two seasons in Carolina. Worley hasn't developed as much as fellow 2016 draftee James Bradberry and fell into a rotation at times with Kevon Seymour, who should now have a clear path to a starting role. The Eagles want to spend money at just about every position besides running back and cornerback, and Worley gives them another low-cost option as they try to replace Patrick Robinson, who will likely leave in free agency this offseason.

Perhaps we could have had him for less (or could have been more),  you never know.  But, It's an OK price.  Plus,  who knows,  maybe with an extension and/or a little guaranteed money,  it will be less. Either way,  it's not worth sweating over

Sure. Smith the player is basically a decent deep threat with bad hands. He’s okay as an addition and no one’s complaining about trying to address the WR position.

However, the value of giving 5 million to a receiver getting cut anyways AND making our cornerback depth makes zero sense. UNLESS we are cutting him and getting that money back, we lost this deal hard. No value at all in taking an old receiver who’s worse at beating press, route running, and has just as bad hands as Ginn 5 million

Barnwell's Free Agency and Trade Grades

Well, possibly.  But you never know what may happen when a player hits free agency.  As has been stated numerous times on this forum, there are no guarantee a player will sign with any particular team or for what price.  As I recall, Torrey did some nice work in the SB with Foles as QB.

And honestly, just from reading the article you posted, I fail to see how the Eagles get  an A- while the Panthers get a C on this trade.  If you weren't a fan of either team and unfamiliar with either player, it looks more like a wash to me.  If Smith can get open deep for us like he did Philly, he's certainly got a QB now that can get the ball to him.

He’s equal to Samuel right now in terms of talent. Actually, Samuel is better at beating his corner at the line of scrimmage. They both are deep threats who have bad hands, except one is much cheaper and younger.

Lmao this is absurd.
