i was thinking he had GM duties too, but Im fairly certain Hurney wasnt here in 2001

The Carolina Panthers have participated in 20 NFL Drafts and have drafted 156 players since 1995.

None have been as successful as the 2001 draft. You can argue against that, and some no doubt will. But in a court of law, you'd probably be declared wrong based on the evidence.

The Panthers' first three picks in 2001 were linebacker Dan Morgan from Miami (Fla.), defensive tackle Kris Jenkins from Maryland and a wide receiver/kick returner from Utah by the name of Steve Smith. The oddity of the draft was that although it produced three of the best players in team history - a trio that would be key to Carolina's Super Bowl run two years later - they all were rookies on the worst team in franchise history that went 1-15.

Fourth-round selection Chris Weinke from Florida State was the starting quarterback that season. Jarrod Cooper, a fifth-round choice, was a defensive back who became an immediate and important contributor on special teams.

Although head coach George Seifert still had the final say in all personnel matters, virtually all of the planning and execution for the 2001 draft was done by director of football operations Marty Hurney and director of player personnel Jack Bushofsky

I think some people are over reacting to the fact that we haven't signed a "big time free agent receiver".  Signing Watkins (Chiefs), Robinson (Bears), or Richardson (Redskins) would set us up for some serious cap issues and still not fill the other holes our team. There's a chance that none the teams that signed them will even make the playoffs next season.

KC made the playoffs in 2018, but next near they'll have a 1st year starter at the most important position in the league, QB. Plus their division is getting stronger. San Diego almost made the playoffs, and would have if it hadn't been for their terrible start. Gruden is coming to Oakland which should at least improve their offense. Case Keenum is better than the scrubbs the Broncos had to trout out last season. There's no way Chicago is making the playoff with Minnesota, GB, and Detroit ahead of them in the NFC north. I don't see the Redskins leap frogging the Eagles in the East. .

Look at the receiving stats for last years SB champion. The leading receiver was their TE. None of the WR's had over 1,000 yards. I'm glad Hurney didn't overpay for those guys. Flashy WR's don't win SB's, strong rosters do.

NAME REC TAR YDS AVG TD
Zach Ertz 74 110 824 11.1 8
Alshon Jeffery 57 120 789 13.8 9
Nelson Agholor 62 95 768 12.4 8
Torrey Smith 36 69 430 11.9 2

I wasn't happy with missing out on Watkins and Robinson, but it was expected and acceptable.  But, this is getting ridiculous.  Same poo happened last year with safety and look how that turned out...  we were linked to top tier guys and sat around as each and every one of them signed elsewhere and our safeties played like absolute poo.  Church, Cyprien, Swearinger...  now the same thing with receiver...  Richardson was my favorite remaining guy.  Now, once again, we're forced to pick for need in the draft.

I don't care who the GM is, this franchise just can't get poo right, EVER.

Yeah biggest babies. Look at other teams drafts when they draft a QB, they load their drafts with weapons. We didn't draft a single offensive player until the 7th round during Cams. We have not given Cam one single legitimate WR during his tenure here.

we don't want to spend over $10 mil in free agent on top WR FA. We don't want to spend 6-8 mil on the next tier WR FA. We don't want to use top picks on wide receivers. So the team isn't willing to do anything, but expects different results. Pathetic.

Ive been a fan of this team for a long time and I would have to agree with you, its getting very old and everyone keeps finding someway to defend against this. At SOME point we have to Atleast TRY to give cam proven weapons. I would rather atleast try and grab weapons than to sit back n still fail without them.

I'll admit that the crew we rolled into the playoffs with was pretty bad. But, I think it's way too early to say Cam won't have any weapons for the 2018 season.

Funchess stepped up and proved that he's at least a solid #2, and potentially a #1 if he improves as much as he did between seasons 2 and 3. Torey Smith is already an improvement over the other guys currently on the roster. He's only 29 and still has top end speed. His contract is manageable and he's won SB titles with 2 franchises. I think he's a good addition to the team. Chris Samuels should be better going into his 2nd year and the slot position appears to be his to lose. Add Olsen to the mix and we could already be set at WR1, WR2, slot, and TE. Plus, we have Christian out of the backfield.

FA hasn't even officially started. After the initial overspending frenzy is over, we could still pick up a solid veteran WR, and we still have a draft to conduct. I don't think there's any way we head into 2018 with the same mediocre WR squad we took to New Orleans in the 2017 Wild Card game. It's way too early to panic.

Cam got to a Super Bowl with Ted Ginn, Philly Brown and Jericho Cotchery. He doesn't need great WR's, just good/dependable ones.
