Is Ryan Kalil still safe?

Panthers could convert all but $1.015M of Ryan Kalil $4.5M base salary into signing bonus along with his $1.5M 3rd day of league year roster bonus while adding 4 dummy/voidable years to create $3.988M of cap room. There would be $3.988M of dead money in 2019 when Kalil retires.

Will hurt us in the long run but easy to clear space for this season.

That wouldn't change how much he is getting paid it would just help on our cap space this year.  We could easily restructure Cam, Luke, or Short and free up more cap.

At this point I think he is safe but who knows.

Kalil is one of my favorite players but he’s played 14 combined games the last two years. He played 6 games last year and we were in the playoffs and won 11 games. He makes us a better team.

But if there are cap savings to be had with that kind of time missed I would be shocked at all if they told him they were gonna make a change. Again...when healthy I think he’s the best in the league and makes our offense way better. But it’s questionable at this point if he can stay healthy.

I disagree with that, very good at one point but i think there is a couple guys i would take over him. Far as the offense i think we have long arrived to the point where we can function without him.

I think if you have a chance to upgrade safety or WR, and you need to cut Kalil because he won't restructure or something, you do it.

I think he may be OK with it, not like he'll lose money.

But you can't hold up getting better for a guy that probably plays half the games this year and then retires , honestly.

Read that tere's a bonus in Kalil's contract that makes the cap savings for cutting him a few million lower if he's not cut by sometime tomorrow.

With all that's happened to date, is Ryan still safe?

He’s got 1.5 Million roster bonus due today. If we hear nothing, then I’d assume he’s a panther for this year. Possibility remains we’ve made changes to his contract to lower his figure and it’s not public knowledge yet but no way we pay him that roster bonus and cut him later

Sometimes the boss has to make tough decisions and not be sentimental. I think this is one of those times. Ryan Kalil is great when he's healthy and a great locker room guy, but he's just not the player he once was and not worthy of the money. I don't think he'd take a pay cut because I think the only reason he's coming back for one more year is because of the money.

I think you move on and thank him for being a great Panther. Draft a center. You can get quality centers after the first round.

Why won't he restructure or take a cut for the team he's a big time team guy.

This right here is what pisses me off. If he is such a team guy why are you expecting 10 million knowing his past 2 years have been plagued with injury. I think the same goes for TD- He is not worth 8 million. If they both cut their salary to match Peppers you are talking space to after a Honey Badger and Crabtree to make a strong run

TD's making only $4.7mil this coming year.

Kalil graded out as a middle of the pack center last year even with the injury.  If he returns to form he makes us better, if he's injured, obviously we suffer.  It's a complete dice roll at this point.  The bad news is that Larsen graded out below average.

Yea, he's a big cap hit, but the chances of us getting anyone as good as him with the money we would save is pretty low.

The best available is probably Paradis from Denver, but he's got a second round tender stuck on him so we'd be out a draft pick *and* the contract money probably about even with what Kalil is getting.  If you felt you could do a team friendly deal for four years, sure, you'd go after him . . . but the guy is legit and Denver can pay him.

After that, you've got Sullivan with the Rams who had a nice season . . . but he's 33.  Do you really want to spend 7 million on a guy that age?  Pouncey from the Dolphins is available, but he made as much as Kalil did last season so . . . chances are it's zero savings to us.

I mean, we're kinda stuck.  Yes, it stinks.  Sure, I'd like to see Kalil get 5 million and hand back the rest, but what are the chances?

Ryan would be crazy to go for that. Once he retires, the Panthers could come after him for that remaining unearned bonus money. I don't think Hurney would if that's the agreement they made, but there's no guarantee that Hurney will still be the GM.

Actually, they can structure it in such a way that the bonus can't be reclaimed by the team. Only know this because Saints just did that with Brees. If Brees retires , Saints can't get the bonus back.

From OTC:

"The signing bonus used prevents forfeiture in the event of retirement at the end of the contract."

Because NFL contracts are so complex, don't know if they could do that for Kalil or not, does seem like they should be able to.

    • Great article on all the Lil Canes attending their debutantes ball. Walt with a great breakdown of all the rookies, as always, and I'm a huge fan of his team coverage, he is truly a treasure, but as a fan of mixed metaphors and superfluous language which some might ignorantly refer to as a "run-on sentence" I never really understood what that mean or where to put the comma after a quote in the middle of a sentence, but holy poo Walt, this is a gem, "While there's a long road left in front of them left to determine whether or not they'll have that same success on the blue line again, the beginning stretch of the journey has been thrown a wrench, and the story on defense has been the emergence of up-and-comers forced into becoming lineup regulars." , bravo, take a bow, sir!
    • How do I activate said Krispy Kreme deal? I'm stoned man you can't be playing with me about this...
    • When the broadcast showed the two benches side by side during the last TV timeout, it was pretty obvious the whole operation is a shitshow. If I was the owner, I would play that clip, with commentary, on the jumbotron at MSG as I fired the coach, GM, President, the whole lot. Bring in your AHL leadership team, wholesale, to finish out the season and start from scratch next year.  Can't fire all the players and fold the season. But, hopefully decapitating the zombie will light a fire under the body and burn out the cancer of the roster. (It makes sense if you don't think about it...) There are obviously issues on the roster. But, you can't have the entire coaching staff completely tuned out with 5 minutes left in a 2 goal game this early in the season. And you can't trust the people that hired them to hire the next staff. If you trust your AHL GM/Scouts, let them run the deadline firesale.   ...     Please don't let the owner read any of this. Because, this poo is hilarous!
