Postions most often drafted between picks 20-28

Was killing some time over at http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2011&round=round1#round1

and was able to compile this list of players taken between picks 20-28 with our pick being the median (pick 24).

I used every draft since the new CBA (2011-2017)

This = 63 players total. Here is the breakdown of positions taken in that range, in order of most to least.

  1. DE (10), CB (10), WR(10)
  2. LB (7)
  3. TACKLE (6), Guard (6)
  4. QB (4), DT (4)
  5. SAFETY (3)
  6. TE (2)
  7. RB (1)

PICK 24 ONLY

Corners led the way with 3, Tackle's,LB,DE, AND Guard each had one taken.

Hurney himself has picked within that same criteria 3 times and netted the following.

  • Gamble at 28 in 04
  • Deangelo Williams at 26 in 06
  • Beason at 27 in 07

* We would have picked 29th in 09 but traded that pick to move up and get Otah at 19 the prior year.

First off, this was some quality data mining @panther4life. Really usable information there!

At picks 20-28 it's often not about what your need is, but about grabbing the best of the remaining players and the spread of positions taken really seems to reflect that.

Then, looking at Hurney's picks during that frame in the draft, he's done excellent. Each of those guys were league leaders in their day. In truth, his run of 1st Round picks has been exemplary, with only Otah standing out as a bust (and that was due to injury -- something no one can predict).

While the final say in the pick is officially Hurney's, a lot of weight goes to the opinions of the scouting department. The question I have is do we have as good a set of scouts as we used to have or did we have a lot of turnover there during Gettleman's tenure?

    • You would hope so. I’m confused why the sports world seems split on Bryce when he’s obviously not working out.
    • So let’s do the reverse? Make everyone agree everything he does is a disaster? I also think the whole “gaslighting” is on the eye of the beholder. It went from he can’t avoid one single sack countered with he actually did that well Sunday (with data backing it) to a little breakdown of why he is so bad. People are going to have different opinions. I’m also not going to pretend this wasn’t happening Day one with this little QB.
    • All this great stuff he has done, how often does he do it?  I have it at three or four games out of 14 where he was very good and then you get a drive here or a series there where there are some good things. Here is the gaslight part: everyone has put him on a curve with his first year the baseline, neglecting to understand how bad he was then. Even if he comes back twice as good, where does that really leave him? 25th ranked or thereabouts.     He had so far to go, and still does, it is a Major ‘settle’ to accept his play as worthy of giving him our future.  You want to settle when the Bucs have Mayfield, and the Saints have overtaken us at QB? We will be third in the division at QB. That is good enough for y’all?
